I would like to communicate with anyone who has done research on the Harris families from Patrick Co VA or from Goinstown. I am looking for the parents of James Harris bc1810 place unknown who married 5-30-1830 in Patrick Co VA to Charlotte/Locky Bowman bc1815 place unknown. Using census records and other documents, I can’t place my James Harris in any of the Patrick Co VA families of that era. We have done yDNA on the line and match with several families in Group 6 of the Harris yDNA Surname Project, but we can’t seem to make the pedigree connection. So, I am looking for advice on where else to search. Thanks.
March 14, 2007 at 2:32 am #25362You might want to look thru USGenWeb and focus on searching their Virginia Archives. Here is something I ran across with just a cursory search.

Registration of Free People of Colour in Patrick County Virginia, 1791-1865
September 1830
JAMES HARRIS aged between 18 and 20 years, five feet three inches high, a
dark mulatto with a scar on his left cheek and in his forehead between the
eyes.

This just happens to be where my ancestors are from so I have done a lot of searching in these archives, especially the court records.
Good luck.

Click around and find the excellent regional genealogy library they have in that area.
March 14, 2007 at 2:32 am #26048I was wondering if you have found info yet on the Harris family? I have been searching for some time on Nann Harris. It is like she just appeared and disappeared. I think she is my missing link in finding my grandfather’s Native past. I assume she was born between 1836-1840 in Va, NC or Ky. She was married to George W. Tucker in SE Kentucky. She probably died around 1870 because her husband married a second time and had more children starting around 1872. Below is a picture of her great grandson. He is obviously not pure white. I hope someone can open the door on this family. Thanks, Reba

Bill
March 14, 2007 at 2:32 am #26094I have had contact with numereous Tucker’s in Kentucky that have shared the info with me. All have the same info. George and Nann had two sons, William C. and Leonard M. Tucker.
