Growing up in Indiana my father’s family was very open about saying we were part Indian, though not knowing how or why. Dad and my Aunt said it was Blackfoot and others said Cherokee.
My adult sons’ have a similar background though more direct through their father’s family..… unregistered Cherokee.
I may be finding unknown Cherokee and Creek or Choctaw from my mother. She’d have been so pleased as she was one to keep track of everyone who was part Indian, which are many in north-west Indiana, always saying how pretty or handsome they were.
In Nebraska I’ve made ventures into the Indian communities and languages; Omaha, Lakota, Ponca and Winnebago. I was overwhelmed to learn I may be tied to them. I so very much identify with all that I read here. I am very thank for you all. I say in Umonhon [Omaha]

I’ve been visiting since early last Fall and have been trying to remember surnames and locations associated with members. So far I’m unaware of a connection with your names. However I have virtually no verification on two of three of my great grandmothers I’m looking at; not even a surname on the youngest one so all possibilities remain open at this point.
Only yesterday I was thinking how my Great Uncle, Earl Derflinger migrated to Michigan. I found the town was Buchanan in Berrian County between your Cass County and Lake Michigan. I’m thinking I should attempt to locate all living descendants of my Great Grandfather and attempt to contact them to see what family lore may be out there.

My 3rd great grandmother, Rebecca MorningStar Lightfoot and her husband Hiram Jones moved to Berrien County Michigan after they were married in Ohio.
Last night I had just found that a good deal of Saponi had moved up there to Cass back in around the same time as Rebecca did.
I also have a letter from Rebecca’s grand daughter to her daugheter about Rebecca, “My Indian grandmother’s name was Rebecca Morningstar from Three Reivers Michigan. Potawatomie we think”. They evidently didnt know that she was from Ohio.
But than I got to think, maybe she was a mix of Potawatomie/Blackfoot.
Everyone I have ever encountered in my family, from cousins I never knew have all said Blackfoot.
I am thinking out loud that maybe there was family up there that she belonged to. Or maybe Hiram- he was a Jones, and there are Jones that were Saponi as well.
Does anyone know where I can find records of the Saponi peoples that were up and around Cass and Berrien County Michigan?

I am researching members of my family from Brumswick County Virginia, I know that my great-grandmothers maiden name was Easter. I have noticed that name on various census records. Can anyone help me find information on the Saponi tribe of NC and VA. I would like to find out as much information as I can.

There are several different Saponi/Sappony tribes in NC and Va, my suggestion would be to do a search of the website with your information first and see what has already been posted. And then you can post your genealogical information on a thread in the genealogy section where any researchers can easily see what you are seeking, good luck to you.
Yes, Mousini’s right, do a search on the word “Easter” here (upper nav bar to the right). I just did and a number of pages came up. It’s not always for a surname, but sometimes is. (Hint: the search word will be highlighted in red, so you can scroll through quickly.)
Mousini, could you tell Ken his email address on here is no good? People have been trying to reach him and can’t. Let me know when it’s good and I’ll re-send.
Also, CW, not all Saponi descendant’s would be represented in the existing state-recognized tribes. Brunswick county, being where Fort Christanna was located, is one of the last places the conglomeration of tribes dubbed Saponi were. You’ll also find many posts here on Fort Christanna.
Becky just sent me emails from my profile and from a post and both came through just fine. I receive emails when someone posts to a thread to which I’m subscribed. I have the same email and server that I have had since coming on line in 2001. Must be a problem on their end?
