I have two questions regarding two sets of census records.
This for the Riley side of my family.
1860 Census Walhalla, S.C. Pickens County
This census shows F.A. Riley listed as a com. school teacher.
Now is com. an abreviation for community?
Also are there records that are kept of past school teachers?
The next census is for 1880 Lafayette County, MS
This record shows William Johnson Riley and next door is his supposed father F.A. Riley.
Now the question is why are these white families in a black/mulatto neighborhood. Was F.A. Riley possibly teaching there?
Could this have been a poor neighborhood?
Could it have been a mixblood Native neighborhood?
How would I go about finding answers to these questions?
If what I have seen of this Riley line be true they go back to Cavan, Ireland?
Hugh and Mary Maguire coming to America through Piscataway,MD. I’m questioning this part cause Miles Riley father to Ferrall Riley father to Failidh father to Hugh is possibly in Rappahanock County VA 1663-65 and? Where is move to MD?
Hugh and Mary have Eliphaz and Eliphaz has John.
John Riley marries Elizabeth McCullough and they have 7 children:
James b.1738 MD
Johnson Michael b.1743 MD
William Wellman b.1745 MD
Henry b.1748 MD
Zachariah b,1766 MD
Jeremiah b.1767 MD
Hezekiah b.1768 MD
Now in 1794 St Pauls Parish Charleston, S.C. records either Eliphaz or John Riley’s death. Can’t remember which right off hand.
Hezekiah Riley marries a woman named Ruth.
they have Mary Nancy and Daniel E. Riley.
Ruth dies and Hezekiah remarries a woman named Lenny and they have Ira Ellis and Charles.
Daniel E. Riley marries Gillian/Gilli(anne) and they have:
Fredrick b. 1828 S.C.
Jane b. 1836 S.C.
Nancy b.1837 S.C.
Martha b.1839 S.C.
Margaret b.1841 S.C.
Charles b.1842 S.C.
Mary b.1843 S.C.
James b.1844 S.C.
John b.1847 S.C.
Amanda b.1849 S.C.
I am assuming that Fredrick Riley is F.A. Riley so that could be a leap.
Assuming that this F.A. Riley in 1880 Layfayette County, MS is the same as the F.A. Riley in 1860 Walhalla, S.C. Pickens County then the Willis named on that census would be William Johnson Riley whom is the same as W.J. Riley in Layfayette County, MS.
This would probably mean that the Jane that is with F.A. Riley in 1860 is the mother of the Willis age 10 listed. In 1880 (MS.) F.A. Riley is living with a woman named Martha which is probably his sister b. 1839.

“Virginia Colonial Land Grants
Rappahannock County
Land patents or “grants” issued to colonists by the Colony of Virginia; number of acres and when issued.
Miles Riley 200 acres 1663
Miles Riley 1100 acres 1665″
I’m very curious about these women. Jane that married F.A. Riley, Gillian that married Daniel E. Riley, and Ruth that married Hezekiah Riley; these women have no last name from this data and I’m wondering about them.
Pickens County, S.C. is also where my Waters line comes in the picture with the Webb family namely Alice Ailsey Waters daughter of Matthew Waters. Austin Webb marries Ailsey in Wilkes County, GA April of 1783.

Mountain Creek (Baptist Church?) Cemetery – Thomas Burriss, b. 1782, d. 12/2/1849; hopefully, his wife, too, Jane Davis (no info); their son, Reuben Burriss, b. 2/20/1807, d. 12/18/1884; his wife, Delilah, b. 10/1806, d. 10/28/1885; their son, Zera(h) Burriss, b. 2/24/1850, d. 12/19/1917; his wife, Clara Lou Riley, b. 7/28/1854, d. 8/9/1927. Please note that there seem to be many spellings for Burriss/is/ess (it could even be “Borroughs”), so I could be a bit wrong. Also, numerous Burris family reunions were held at this site: 8/23/1906; 1924; 1932; 8/15/1940.
Old Silver Brook Cemetery – Patrick Riley, b. 1740, d. 1823; his wife, Ann (no info); their son James Riley, b. 2/17/1776, d.5/3/1850; his wife, Nancy Taylor, b. 4/15/1782, d. 7/22/1856.
The “Old Burying Ground” near Gluck Mill – Joshua Burriss, b. 1724, d. 1804. I have no idea where this is (I have seen on a map an area in S. Anderson called “Gluck”); Maybe his wife is there, too, Sara Chamblee (no info).
I would also love to see any old property that any of these folks owned or lived on.
There are many ancestors that I have no info as to where they are buried, but I know that at least several had links to Pickens. Perhaps the following folks are there. Specifically, I want to find the graves of Susanna Broaddus and Edmund Pendleton Gaines, parents of Rev. Nathaniel Gaines; Ann Martha George and Rev. Henry Gaines, parents of Edmund Pendleton Gaines; Nancy Berry, Sarah Anthony, and Hudson Berry, Sr., mother, grandmother, and grandfather to Clarissa Arnold; and finally Frances Sara Gaines and William “Squire” Riley, daughter of Clarissa Arnold and Rev. Nathaniel Gaines, and son of Nancy Taylor and James Riley.
