I found another name in my line….Guess Linda !!! It was Carter. My granddads name… Can you tell me if Carter is a certain tribe.:) 🙂 😀
Well, it’s my name by marriage, and before that, earlier down the line, it was the name of a stepfather, so I haven’t looked into it much.
Forest is correct, Carters are found among both the Lumbee and the Coharie. Carter is one of my lines. My Carters were from Sampson County, NC (Moses, a Revolutionary War soldier, and Henry, Moses’s cousin) but prior to Sampson County, they appear to have come from Cumberland (Margaret [ Henry’s mother; described as a free mustee {How is a so called mustee different from a so called mulatto? Is mustee a corruption of the word mestee/metis? } ] ) New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties. And, before that, they came from Bertie (Margaret’s uncle, Edward, who purchased 300 acres in Bertie County, North Carolina, on the Potecasi Branch and the Indian Path in August 1730) and Edgecomb Counties.

According to Webster’s New World Collegiate Dictionary,2 definitions are given for “mustee”.Can be an octoroon (1/8 black,7/8 white) or any MR person.It is a corruption of mestizo.
“Carter” is a common surname here in the south.

My experience has been that Mustee GENERALLY implies Indian ancestry, as opposed to mulatto, which may or may not, depending on context, I believe it derives from the same root as “Mestizo”
