We made it to the park…thanks Ken and Becky for recommending it, as it is breathtaking. We got in about an hour ago…still somewhat light and the deer were out romping and my daughter saw a bobcat. It is a beautiful evening, going to get out and enjoy…blessings,

July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27534Awesome. I can’t wait to spend the weekend there. Might be hard to leave, though.
July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27541Occoneechee State Park was wonderful as was Fort Christanna! When I get the pictures downloaded I will post some.
I want to say a “Big Thank You” to Ken and Becky for showing around the Flatt and the Mill and Cemeteries, it was a very powerful experience and I have spent the day reflecting on everything. The Corn and Cukes are delicious too! Seeing these places has helped me to understand my family and my roots better. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow!:)
Bee,
I can’t wait to meet you, I have heard nothing but kind words about you!:)
July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27570Shirly, you are most welcome…we enjoyed spending time with you and your wonderful family…and energetic kids….LOL. Thanks for the trout….gonna cook ’em up when the whole family is here…that’s enough fish to feed an army! I hope you have a safe and happy journey home. See you next May…and talk to you sooner.

July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27576Thanks Becky, we enjoyed our time with you as well.:) It was nice to meet you in person…as I can see you and Ken are serious about research and finding truth.
We enjoyed our evening in Virginia Beach…ran along the shore through the waves…much fun. We got into Wytheville late after a stop at the Natural Bridge, it was awesome. However, I hate to see these places get so commercialized with junk! The walk was however, breathtaking. Today we will be going to Grundy, the library has a copy of Compton’s, “The History Of Buchanan County,” which has a lot of info on my George Gibson. We are also going into KY to Pikeville, Paintsville to see what info I can find. I will post what I can locate.

July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27598I’d love to see the pics of the park and Ft. Christianna.
July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27849We stopped back by Occoneechee on our way home from the gathering. We hoped to check out the cemeteries in there. We found a lot of periwinkle growing all the way out to the road at the plantation site. It was so thick and green. And we walked down to the Crudup grave…an easy find. The slave cemetery gave us a “good” walk….just don’t let Dreaminghawk be your guide…LOL. My feet are still hurting…..of course, he blamed it on the map. But, I love him anyway….
July 19, 2007 at 1:59 am #27856Sounds like you all had a wonderful time…I really enjoyed myself when we were there…my favorite was sitting out by the fire listening to the night sounds. Here is one night photo…you can make out the eyes of deer in the field…and a few of Ft. Christanna, just beautiful.
I purchased a topo map of Occoneechee and the reservoir, still perusing…
