During my research, I’ve often wondered if there were any other peoples other than Native Americans with high-cheekbones. It wasn’t something I’d found any answers to until now. I want to link you to two references – one just a Wiki. Perhaps some of you have wondered this as well … but perhaps those with African heritage already know this … but will post these anyway:

My 2 cents…..here on Saponitown we are looking….if we do not already know about our Native American heritage….and if we already know we are helping others with finding thier tribal affiliations. This forum is not about any other culture…we realize that some people may have more than just Native American heritage but this is in my opinion not the place to search for other heritages that are not Native American or discuss them.

When I made that post several weeks ago, I did not realize that archaeological and anthropological information regarding the many possibilities of “mixes” with the Native American was out-of-bounds on this forum.
I am always glad when you younger folks can help to correct us older folks in our so-errant ways.
I don’t mean to censor anyone’s opinions, just to state what my position is, and since I’m the lady with the locks and keys around here, I am the ‘momma’ who gets the last word, in theory anyway. Dan, you know now you are not “officially” prohibited from this subject here, but you also now know that there’s at least one other poster who doesn’t care for it. I do ask all Saponitown posters to be sensitive to one another.
In case anyone can’t translate Serbo-Croatian, I said, “I am the granddaughter of Kata Roknic.” As an Ancestor, I venerate her, her picture is looking over me as we speak, and I would never do anything, anywhere to slight her memory. She was a great lady, and saw as much or more suffering and oppression in her homeland as anyone in this country. There are no more of our family left in our ancestral village. The last war carried them all off, done by the descendants of those who colonized our country 600 years ago and occupied it with brutality because we would not give up our culture and religion.
I’m not investigating my NA roots because I want to forget about these other roots. Rather, it’s a way for me to honor not just my long-abused and disrespected Native lines, but by transference, to honor all the other many Ancestors I have who suffered much the same.

I’m not as young as you may think…smile…but thank you thinking so..smile. I was not trying to be disrespectful and I am sorry you were thinking that. I just don’t want anyone who would like to carry on the traditions of their Native ancestors and possibly one day have membership in that tribal affiliation..and this includes you…to have it read by someone who would use the fact that you are “embracing” other parts of your culture to hinder you from being recognized as an Indian in your tribal affiliations. Trust me.. you would be surprised who reads the forum and would love to discredit anyone who may be mixed blood….even when they themselves are….I could name a few tribes in NC that would do that. We Native Americans have been labeled , colored, african american, black, mulatto and mustee in an effort to do away with our heritage….so I guess what I am trying to say is ” it’s not always the way we think it is”. Peace and much love to you my friend.

Jade, I am absolutely ecstatic that you’ve written it as you did – that was exactly how I was hoping you’d meant it … and I deeply appreciate your information and your concern – and have no problem (usually) accepting advice from my brothers and sisters.
I must confess that I checked your profile and knew that I could use that tool a bit to my advantage. It’s an old “Indian-trick” someone once taught me. Please forgive? 😀
I will only deviate from the thread slightly here to mention that I have seen this “prejudice” that you mention first-hand while among the Shoshone and Arrapaho – who profess not to like each other but are forced to share a Reservation and are so inter-married it’s downright comical even though they mean some of what they say. In some ways, our Copper-ness is no different from the rest of the colors in that we are human and fallible.
I only stole the thread to say that – and to pray this … that although it is a beautiful thing for those who are Tribal to be proud and to learn and practice the traditions and sing the songs and tell the stories of their people – and I am so envious because I do not know these things – and so far behind development-wise because of it – but an even more beautiful thing will happen one day – and the only words I know to describe that thing is to tell you that I pray for:
The United State of Native America.

Thanks Jade for the explanation. I’ve learned alot these past couple of years and your explanation summed it all up for me. I guess that’s just the way it is (politically).

Please read my last response to the original post by Dan. Of course there is nothing wrong whatsoever in embracing all of your heritages but I had reasons for saying what I did and my response to Dan will hopefully make that clear.

All of the posts and explanations were excellent and, I believe, well received, but it is the tradition of the “others” to try to cause separation in us in whatever manner/way they could/can. We should never lose sight of the fact that we are all of more than one culture and be proud of it. The forum is what it is and should be used and respected that way.
