Hello,
I’ve been doing family history research for sometime and seem to have hit a brickwall in trying to find more info about our Blackfoot ancestry. Like many of you, I was told by my grandpa that his grandma was Blackfoot. A few years ago, I had a DNA test done to confirm whether or not this was true and found that I do indeed have Native American ancestry.
The two possible grandmothers are Mary Elizabeth Kelly/Kelley (born in 1836, location unknown and later lived in Maryland) or Mary Catherine Quinn (born 1846 in Maryland and lived her whole life there). I’m tending to lean toward Mary Elizabeth Kelley because I am having so much trouble finding any info about her in the archives online and have had more luck with Mary Catherine Quinn. Also, Mary Elizabeth Kelley died when my grandpa’s father was only 8 years old (well before my grandpa was born), so it would make sense why nothing more was passed on.
Do any of you know if either of these surnames (Kelly/Kelley or Quinn) are/were present in the Saponi community? Any suggestions about where I might be able to go from here in my research?
Thanks for any help,
Heather

Have you tried using ancestry.com at your local library? It would not answer the Blackfoot question, but might give you more information on your genealogy.

My mom just got a full subscription to Ancestry.Com, so I’ve been trying to use to it to find info about the Blackfoot side of my Dad’s family. It’s been very helpful for many parts of my family, but Mary Elizabeth Kelly can only be found on one other person’s tree, not in any type of census, birth/marriage/death certificate, without her married name (Campbell).
Thank you for the suggestion though. Most of the times Ancestry.Com is great.

October 14, 2007 at 5:11 am #28698Thanks for sharing your information, Heather. I suggest using the search feature on this forum for your Kelly name, and any others you may have. The Kelly name has come up before.
Also, please read this thread concerning Maryland.

You’ll see there is some corroboration for your family’s story.
