March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #30161Trajertia,
You should do a search from the forum on Townes. There are several posts here on that name. Saj
March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #30162Trajertia, There was someone on the forum at least a year ago connected with the Townes family. I remember communicating with them and believe the family we knew was a part of their family. The family of Townes we knew were living in northern Vance county not too far from the Virginia line. Irene Townes kept our two little girls in those days which would have been in the 1970’s. She and her family lived in the Dexter North Carolina area near Island Creek Church. The other person on the forum was kin to them if I remember correctly. Look the name up on search and you should find those entries plus others. I wish I knew more on this family to share with you and over the years we moved away from the area but we have always remembered and loved Irene and what a wonderful lady she was. Feel free to contact if you like. Ed eyancey@ec.rr.com
March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #30174Thanks. I’ll do a search as you suggested.
Thanks again

March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #30318Thanks! I really appreciate your assistance very much. How do I find out if they have registered as Saponi Indians?
Thanks again!
March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #30357I can’t pinpoint which Native American Tribes were/are living in Granville and Vance Co. NC. However, my paternal grandparents were from those counties. Granddaddy Lewis and Grandma Lewis’s (Hargrove) people were from North Carolina. Then my paternal grandparents moved in Mecklenburg Co. VA (Palmer Springs). Apparently, Grandma Lewis was from Townsville, NC (Northern Vance County). Our home church is Antioch Baptist Church located in Townsville, NC (Right on the state line).
Not sure if that helps but my paternal grandparents both carried Native American, African and some European Blood.
March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #33519I think we may be “cousins.” I’ve been researching the Hargroves from Northern Granville (now Vance Co.) who I’ve only very recently discovered. They owned a lot of land in the Nutbush District which would have included Townsville. The ancestor I’m looking for was named Richard Hargrave (d. 1792). He had 2 illegitimate sons, Richard & John, who I am convinced were mothered by a Native/(probably African) American woman from Orange Co. along the Haw River in what is now Alamance Co. This area was very close to the Upper Saraun Village on the Dan River. This is so many generations ago, but seems to still have interspersed phenotypic expression. It also resulted in the future illegitimacy of another of my ancestors (Parents could not marry b/c of race laws) and some confusing racial categorization.
If you have any genology on your Townsville Hargroves, I would love to hear about them. The most recent Hargrove ansector in my family was Elizabeth Hargrove (Chapman). She had 8 siblings: Lydia (Johnston), Gilliam, James, Robert, Amey (Newton), Rebecca, Richard, & Israel. Israel had a son named Israel W. and he had a son named Tazwell (I think.) who would have been in Granville during the mid-1800’s. I don’t know about any of the other lines. Also, I don’t know how they would have been classified, racially. But they were definitely planters and slave holders. I am looking for any clues into their racial identify.
Thanks for letting me inquire.

March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #33523Carla, I do have some knowledge of the Hargroves in the Townesville area. We lived in that area for some time and I was in the Historical society. The names you mentioned in the last paragraph seem to be in the family that had a plantation just out of Townesville. They would have been classified as white althoough there is to my knowledge no “white” Hargroves in that area at present time. If you would like information on this family please contact me by email and I would be glad to respond and share what I have. Ed
March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #33524Ed, I can’t figure out how to access your e-mail. I would definitely be glad for any info you may have on the Townsville Hargroves. I am also very interested in the Townsville Chapmans, as the 2 lines are woven. I did just learn that there are some Hargrove tombstone at Hibernia. By the way, I am originally from Vance Co. My e-mail is tuckbandw@yahoo.com I look forward to hearing from you.

March 15, 2008 at 2:41 am #34535Hi, I am sure that we are related. My name is Priscilla Townes-Jones. We share the same grandparents. I know the cemetery that you are referring too.
I hope that you contact me so that we can verify our connection.
Thanks
