Hi,
I have been researching the genealogy of my great grandmother, who according to family tradition was part Indian. I have found that she was descended from Jane Callahan Strong born in virginia in 1770. Her parents, Edward Callahan and Mahala Brock Callahan were married about two years later. They were taken to court and fined for having children out of wedlock, and married on the spot. I have read information that other researchers posted onthe internet that Jane’s paternal grandmother, Unity Harris, was part Indian, but these researchers did not say what evidence there is for this. This Harris family is from Amelia County, Virginia.
Jane’s mother, Mahala “Sukey” Brock is also said to be part Indian. There are some who claim that she was the daughter of the Cherokee chief Red Bird, but this theory does not seem believeable to me. I do believe that she was part Indian, but probably Piedmont Siouan. The Brock family was from Cumberland County, Virginia.
If anybody has information about these families, or tips on where information could be found, i would appreciate it.
Rick

Hey, Rick. Welcome. Why don’t you think this theory is believable?

This is really mind boggling. Quite awhile ago I posted on Callahan. If you search for Callahan, then find the Quadrule Indians of….. you will find that info. Anyway, my direct line of the Stott descends from John Stott and Jane Tomlin. Daughter Mary who married John Callahan would be the mother of Darby Callahan who married Unity Harris. I have seen that Unity was Cherokee, that Mary Stott herself was Native American (maybe through mother?) and that Mahala Brock was also. No proof. The Stott family was out of Lancaster co Va early early on. My line came into ky also. Some of this may never be able to be proven. The info I had came from a descendant of Mary Stott. Saj

I looked up the information on the Quadrule thread. Thanks! There certainly is a lot of information.
The reason I doubt the Red Bird theory is that the Brocks are from Virginia. There seems to be two Red Birds, one from South Carolina and one from Kentucky, but none from Virginia. Also, on the Brock family web page they said they could not find any contemporary evidence linking Red Bird with the Brock family.

Just bear in mind that, before June 1 of 1792, “Kentucky” was part of Virginia.
May 18, 2008 at 4:43 pm #31596Sorry, It’s been a year since I’ve been away. I’ve been taking care of my terminally ill father in law who is Monaca-Cherokee. Anyone found out if Hannah Love wife of John Austin Sr was the Saponi indian? My line goes to John Austin Sr by way of his son Joseph. Thanks for any help. PDA
