Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hello. My name’s Greg Byrd. Some time ago, Linda was kind enough to send me some information on possible Blackfoot/Saponi connections in the South. My father’s family comes from Pensacola, which is very near the Alabama border (and thus called Flabama sometimes). There’s a persistent but unverified rumor in our family that we have “Blackfoot” ancestry. My great-great grandparents seem to have some classic Native American features (prominent cheekbones, for example) but I don’t know much more than that. Linda suggested a possible connection of the Byrd name with William Byrd and the Byrds from NC and VA, but I can’t be sure of that. Does anyone have any knowledge of Blackfoot connections in North Florida or Alabama?
Thanks for listening.
Greg
Welcome Greg,
I know at the time I wrote you there were two or three people I had gleaned from Afrigeneas list, I think, who were Floridians with “Blackfoot” reports. Did you say you traced your Byrds to NC, or was that someone else?
I was thinking about you and the Florida connection today. I know Geronimo and his Apache were sent to Florida, and I’ve heard other western people were sent there at one point, but I would assume that would be in the late 19th century, after the Civil War.
What’s the earliest you trace your people to Florida? That might tell us something. Perhaps there were “regular” Blackfoot there and that explains it. There should be a paper trail on that.
