My g grandmother was born 1 aug 1895 somewhere in roanoke/walton’s mountain. I have been told she was adopted by a stover family, adoptee possibly being a doctor. Iwas told at one time she was probably catawba indian, but according to my aunt she was part of blackfeet tribe? She attended college and married my g grandfather jeter b. morris of powhatan county va. . I have no idea on what her real name might have been, or to where to begin. I do have a picture of her with two american flags in the background. I would appreciate any insight. thanks r.b.

August 19, 2008 at 9:35 pm #32199Welcome Rick. Do you have any idea who the source of the Catawba ID was, and the Blackfoot? It does make sense going by our theory about the origins of the Blackfoot ID. Issi asepa’a means Blackfoot in the Tutelo (Saponi) language. Saxapahaw, Sissipaha NC is named for them, so there WERE native people in the Piedmont who were called Blackfoot. They were at times aligned with the Catawba, and there is some evidence that in the end days as the memory of the distinct tribes was being eradicated, that they were called Catawba as a catch all.
BTW, some consider the Burnett name to be found in some Saponi families. We’ve often found that when you find one, you find a bunch more. . .

Do you have access to ancestry.com? I was looking at the 1910 census, which lists your Jeter B. Morris (18), and there are a few Annie’s listed as well as Nannie’s. You may want to look through these and see if anything fits. I will look to see if there is a Genweb, which has the censuses for hanover.
