Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I’ve searched, for some years I might add – 25 to be exact, for the maiden names of our two Cherokee 2nd G. G. Grandmothers – sisters, Nancy Granny Gore and Jane Gore. Books and pamphlets noted they were Cherokees but we had no maiden names for either. Recently, Ancestry.com posted the Death Certificates for Missouri and Kentucky. Nancy Granny Gore is the informant on her daughter’s Death Certificate and gives her maiden name as Nancy Tipton……my cousin found it, hoorah!
Nancy Tipton Gore was b. 1820 in probably Knox or Blount Co., TN. She married William Carroll “Tipton” Gore in Tn and they migrated to Carroll Co., AR about 1848. From there they moved across the MO Line into Stone Co., MO where both are buried. Calvin Tipton, whose mother is a Jemima Tipton in Carroll Co., AR may be their brother and mother but more research will prove or disprove this.
Does anyone have any known Tiptons that are Cherokee or NA in their families in TN or AR. You can see further information on this family at:

Don’t have any known Tiptons, but checked to see if any were on the Cherokee rolls. None on eastern rolls, but several on Dawes roll. May not be yours, but tis all I can offer:

Thanks Bee:
There are quite a few Tiptons on the Dawes. Possibly neices and nephews of Nancy Tipton Gore. That death certificate with her maiden name on it was a great find.
FYI to All: Ancestry.com has recently put DC’s online for MO and various other states. They are a great source for finding maiden names of our female ancestors.
