Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My Gist family starts in England with Christopher Gist. His Grandson Christopher RICHARD Gist was b 1684 in Baltimore, MD. Richard was married to Zipporah Murray. I have now seen several papers stating that Richard G.’s children, notably Christopher b 1705 in Baltimore and Nathaniel b 1707 and grandson Nathaniel (father of George “Sequoiah Gist) were 1/2 indian. I would like to have documentation or any information as to whom the indian woman who parented with Richard G. was. I can’t find out how they were found to be 1/2 indian. Thank You for any information about this. CLM 🙂
Going that far back in time it would be rare to find more details than that. Your best bet is to research the history of Maryland, which tribes were near the English settlements there and what the relationships were. Sequoiah is the name of the great Cherokee leader, though it’s doubtful they were involved much with the English at that time. Sequoiah’s influence was during the 1830, much later than these people’s lifteims. Dont’ know what to make of that.
Some of my ancestors that I believe were mixed were born in Baltimore. They lived in the area that Gist moved in. Their land was surveyed by G. Washington.
