I am looking for any clues about ancestors from Mecklenburg with the surname Adams. My ancestor was Mary Adams m. Wyatt Short, Mecklenburg Va, 1809. She may have been the daughter of James Adams, d. 1813, with the following siblings: Richard, Lucy Ann, Sarah “Sally.” This Mary may have gone by “Polly.” I don’t know if these folks had any native american lines, but I’d like to find out. Any thoughts or info would be much appreciated.

March 29, 2009 at 2:42 am #33589I just wanted to let you know Mecklenburg Va is now Sheperdstown WV named after Thomas Shephard. There are lots of historic connections between Thomas Shephard the the Pittsburgh area.
Since I am doing research on Meriwether Lewis when he lived in Pittsburgh after the Whiskey Rebellion in the late 1790’s , I am interested in Sheperdstown.
Just a hint that may not go anywhere. Wyatt Earp was related/connected to a Short family. You need to read Wyatt Earps Crabtree Deposition dated April 1926. His Great Great grandparents lived in Frederick Md which is not far from Sheperdstown.

Have a great day!

March 29, 2009 at 2:42 am #33594Sorry, a completely different place. I believe Meckenburg County is someplace in Southern Virginia. The City of Meckenburg was changed to Sheperdstown Va sometime in the early 1800 and then changed to WV in 1862.

Having researched the Whiskey Rebellion – after learning about it from TechTeach – and knowing my ancestors were in the Pittsburgh area circa 1790s a DNA connection stuck out to me:
My mother and TechTeach’s mother have a shared DNA segment that is also shared by Judy Earp. Judy Earp is a cousin of Wyatt Earp.
Judy Earp and Wyatt Earp are descendants of
Walter Earp 1787-1853 of Montgomery MD and Martha Ann Early 1790-1881 of Avery NC.
They were married 1809 in Pittsylvania VA, and removed after to TN.
Walter Earp’s mother Sarah Sally Vaughn is from a line that had ancestors in Cherokee NC circa 1770s and later Hawkins Co TN. By 1821 Vaughns were living across from a Cherokee village before moving further west.
March 29, 2009 at 2:42 am #37603Oh, Mom will get a kick out of this fact!
Sorry, been camping in the sticks of KY, exploring genealogy. Now, we are in the bourban capitol of the world, following the ancestor who went there after the Whiskey Rebellion. No paper chase here, just fun.
