I am new to this site. Thanks for letting me join. I am told that my great, great grandmother was blackfoot. Her name was Samantha Jane Jones, born in Sept. of 1882 in Smithville, Ritchie county WV, . Her parents were Alphens R. Jones (born Nov. 1850)and Elizabeth A. Jones (born Dec. 1852) Samantha lived most of her life in Calhoun WV. Samantha married Alexander Allee Stull, I am told he is a full blooded Italian. One of their children was Lucy Elizabeth Stull (my great grandmother) who married Robert George Wright. They moved to the Akron/Canton, Ohio area after they had my grandmother Ercel Wright. I don’t know much besides the information posted here. I have worked hard to get what information I have. I feel like the search for my ancestry has been one hard and disapointing road. It seems through my research that few members of my family even care to know about this portion of our legacy. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I must say that finding this site has been a blessing from the creator. Thank you all.
July 5, 2009 at 3:40 pm #33945Welcome!!! You will find some great material and people on this website.
July 5, 2009 at 3:40 pm #33948The first clues I got concerning my Blackfoot heritage that turned me in the direction I’m now in, was the information that there once was a roadside market in Elkins, WV noting the location of the “Blackfoot of the Seneca.” If you search on that phrase here on the site, you should find some posts.
Later it made sense in the history of the tribes who became tributary to the Five Nations during that period after their victory over the Susquehanna in PA, and prior to that territory being claimed by the Americans. Our VA/NC Siouan were some of those folks. My article at http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm discusses this and more in context. This is from page three:
I’ve been corresponding for some years with the Mingo-EGADs e-list, devoted to resurrecting Appalachian Iroquois, a close dialect to the Seneca language, which was still spoken in some isolated WV communities as late as the 1950’s. I was alerted to subscribe to this e-mail list when posts were circulating called “The Blackfoot of the Seneca.” Some of the list members recalled seeing a roadside marker by this name in Elkins, WV. The Mingo language informant, Dr. Thomas McElwain, states that “literally everybody in the town of Mingo at the south end of Randolph country [WV] is a Blackfoot.” Dr. McElwain is a Professor of Comparative Religions, and a native of Elkins, WV.
So, it is not at all unusual to have ancestors from WV with this story, and no reason I can see to dismiss it.
July 5, 2009 at 3:40 pm #33954I find this information very interesting. I look forward to learning more….my husband is a card carring member of the six nations reservation in Canada. He is actually Mohawk(Kanyenkaka, meaning people of the flint), but adopted Cayuga. We have studied his people for quite some time and our teaching our children to speak Mohawk. It would just be awesome to find out that I have people that are of the Haudenosaunee. I would love to learn more if you have any other info on this feel free to send it this way. Thanks so much. I have already found more geneology information from people here than in months of searching on my own.
July 5, 2009 at 3:40 pm #33969Ok I’ve done some more digging and so far I have found most of my people from the Calhoun area of WV. So far I have the Jones’ that I come from dated back to 1762. I have Samantha Jones(Ritchie WV) Dau. of Alphues Jones(WV), son of John/James R Jones(Monongalia,WV) son of James Jones(Charles MD & Ritchie Va)Son of SOn of Samuel Jones. Unfortunately THis is where I loose my trail, I can’t seem to find any more info for the Jones family. Do any of these names seem familiar to anyone? I keep finding my family back and forth between WV and Ohio. Seems The Wrights and Jones moved back and forth between the two states. Although most of them were born in WV.
July 5, 2009 at 3:40 pm #34253Lady Hill,
I have Jones in my family. My 3rd great grandfather was Hiram Jones, married to my full blood Blackfoot 3rd great grandmother Rebecca Morningstar.
The only thing is, we think he is from the south, but know nothing of him. The Jones family never hung out or were around Rebecca. Nobody knows nothing.
No one knows for sure. Just guesses. Every state they lived in, he never put the same state he was born in. A mysterious man.
