Just want to give many of you some hope when searching for surnames in your quest. I have always thought the “specific surname” game that many tribes swear by is foolish. To give you a good example in my own lines…the surname Hyman..which is jewish..but I knew they were Tuscarora didn’t make sense. Well, my great grandfather Ishmael Hyman is really a Lynch. His father is George Lynch… his siblings are all Lynches but he worked for William T. Hyman as many of the Tuscarora indians did in Martin and Bertie Co NC. I found his death record on Ancestry and there it was big as day….he was a Lynch by birth. I also found that there were many many more people on the death records for Martin Co that had William T. Hyman listed as father but no mother listed. The individual death certificates have the correct info.
My Plummers are another example. My gr gr gr grandfather John Plummer was born in Southampton Co Va with an Indian name on the Cheroenhaka Nottoway indian reservation. His euro surname was Archer but changed to Plummer when he was brought to NC by John Plummer who was an indian slave owner. The other siblings of John Plummer (Archer) came to NC and were known as the descendants of the Meherrin Tribe . My Archers still live in Winton NC and many are on the Meherrin tribal roles.
There were also some Crosses that were living in Southampton Co Va at that time. There was much intermarrying of the Tuscarora, Cheroenhaka and Meherrin before and after Fort Christanna. The most important thing is to remember we are all related….
My point is don’t get discouraged by surnames that don’t seem to jive with names that are on the roles but you know that they are indian people with a certain tribal connection because the surname that you may know them as may very well not be who they are and who they really are give you the right to be on the tribal role of your people. Most important thing to remember is a tribal role does not make you who you are.

July 6, 2009 at 12:29 am #33958Very well said!!!!! I’ve also come across this one (two names) many times and probably will in the future! And, a person is Indian whether he/she has a tribal roll number or not. There was a disc jockey here in California who made the following phrase common and laughable when he said: “I don’t need no stinking badge”. It compares quite well. You don’t need a CDIB or Roll Number to be what you are.
I have a question for you. I have an Ambrose Williams living on and within the boundary of the Nottaway Circle Track in Southampton Co., VA in, and this is a guess but probably close as I’m not pulling that info to look at it – 1740-49. There was also a Nicholas Williams and others in the same area. Ambrose’ info came from a Royal Land Grand in Southampton but I suspect many of his children married into Indian families – no doubt Nottoway! Are there any early Nottoway/Cheroenhaka Tribal records from this time frame that I can look at anywhere? I’m having a really hard time with this one and these present lands seem to be private or in some kind of restricted park?? Since you mentioned Nottoway in your post, I thought you might be familiar with this research.
Any help appreciated!

Hi Linda,
At one time it was really a mystery for me but not anymore. I just wanted to give some encouragement for those who are now traveling the geno road I have been on for some time now. It is good to know that what may seem to be a dead end may not be one at all!!!
To those who may be reading this…the most helpful thing for me was learning about the geographical area where my people lived and moved from. That helped to put 2 and 2 together so to speak. Then low and behold someone would come along and ask or tell me something  that brings it all together. 🙂

Here are a couple of Cheroenhaka/Nottoway sites.
http://www.cheroenhaka-nottoway.org/about-nottoway-tribe/nottoway-census.html
http://www.nottowayindians.org/home.html
I believe the Cheroenhaka Nottoway have a list of surnames that they are continually updating. Their contact info is on their site.
Hope this helps.
