Paternal family names Massey, Walker, Jeffries, Lyons. Walkers, Jeffries Masseys all came from Va, Rappahannock and Manchester Counties
Maternalfamily names Caldwell, Brown, Simpson all from Laurens Co SC
John Walker G-G-John Walker was coachman on Walker Plantation in Winston-Salem NC. He Ran of with Nancy Jane Reynolds of Patrick Co VA to Chambersburg PA abt 1855. Slavecatchers caught and killed him sometime around the start of the civil war. according to oral family history the Reynolds family paid her $1800 per year for her not to use the Reynolds name. Her brothers founded Reynolds Iron works and the tobacco co.
Thanks
August 7, 2009 at 7:16 pm #34082Interesting tale there. Souinds like a good plot for a mini-series. A coachman would have an easy way of escaping slavery — if his white sweeheart is sitting in the back seat barking orders.
So what name did she go by? Wasn’t she a Walker by then?
Is there a sense that your Walkers were more Indian than African descended?
I had family in Chambersburg, PA bettwen 1810 and 1830. Maybe earlier, but that’s when the record picks p.
August 7, 2009 at 7:16 pm #34083She is in 1880 census as Nancy Jane Walker living with son Thomas 22 yrs old. She was named after her mother Nancy Jane Cox Reynolds. The Reynolds had another daughter in about 1862 they named her Nancy Jane also. We have been told that her husband was killed by slavecatchers. Our Grandfather Henry Sylvester came from Chambersburg to Hollidaysburg just prior to the Confederate attack on Gettysburg. The confederates were selling free blacks back to the south. The Walkers very well may have been of native american ancestry . I’ll send you a pic of Henry.
