My grandmother swore that her grandmother was full-blood Blackfoot, yet that side of the family never made it further west than Rochester, from what I can tell.
And then I found this site. (Cue angelic choir. 😀 )
The data I have been able to trace down is that her name was Cora Ann Moore, and she was supposedly born October 11, 1857 and died May 11, 1927. She married Francis Emery Smith (Frank E in most things I found), who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and spent time in two separate prison camps after capture. He was born April 18, 1844 in Horseheads, NY, and died November 11, 1903.
Frank was born in the Horseheads area, but her son Harry W Smith and granddaughter Cora (my grandmother) were both buried in the Ithaca area, where most of the family seems to have moved to. I have a reference to them living in Newfield, NY (near Ithaca) in 1900.
Any help that can be given in helping me find out more information about my great-great-grandmother would be appreciated.
Thank you.
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34656Hi, Kinsfire,
I’m in Ithaca now and would be happy to try to help, if you need local lookups.
Looks like the family is in the 1900 census in Newfield (Tompkins Co.), farming, but you probably have this:
T623, Roll 1169 Page 158, dwelling 299 family 311
Smith, Frank E 59, farmer, renting
Cora A, wife 42
Raymond, son 22
Alfred, son 20
Emma, daughter 19
Harrie W, son 14
Maud L, daughter 13
Guy, son 7
Edna, daughter 3
Ruth, daughter 1
all listed as white, all born in NY, Raymond and Alfred working as day laborers, Harrie, Maud and Guy in school.
This might be them in the Village of Horseheads, Chemung Co. in 1880:
Series T9, Roll 817 page 507 dwelling 170, family 179
Smith, Frank 36, carpenter
Cora wife 22, keeping house
Raymond son, 3
Alfred son, 1
all listed as white, born in NY
And here’s a Cora Moore, age 12 in Elmira on the 1870 census:
M593, Roll 914, p. 208, 3-WD Elmira
dwelling 610, family 691
Joseph Boardman, 51, painter, born England, US citizen
Louisa Boardman, 32, born NY, father foreign born
Cora Moore, 12, born NY, attended school this year, parents not foreign born
Haven’t found her in 1860. Joseph Boardman is in NYC then, living with his father and brothers.
Do you know where she died?
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34657Unfortunately, no. I’ve noticed that the records I have found so far (from when she was an adult) state that she (Cora Ann) was white, but it was one of those things that my grandmother swore – her grandmother (for whom she was named) was a full-blood Indian.
If I can find a picture of my grandmother (Cora Louise Smith Reagin), you will see just how obvious it is that there was Indian blood in her. If I hadn’t known better, I’d have assumed that it was her that was the full-blood.
Those first two are in my list of ones I’ve found, but that 1870 census is a new one on me. Also interesting that the Boardmans seem to have “adopted” her? She was at least living at that house, but her parents weren’t, if I understand how they did the census back then.
I’m not sure where to look. It’s really annoying – on my grandmother’s mother’s side (Cora Ann is her paternal grandmother), I’ve gotten all the way back past John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, but I come to a dead stop with her, and can’t really find more past Frank. (I only found out Francis Emery from a family history that they FINALLY gave me copies of.) Well, I know his father was named Orville, but nothing past Orville.
I really appreciate any help that anyone here can give.
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34659i didn’t mean to imply that the “white” designation on the census meant she wasn’t Indian, that seems to happen more often than not.
I wonder if Louisa Boardman could be her mother, widowed and remarried.
It looks like you have to order death certificates, and they take months to come (google death certificate and NYS)- but that might list Cora’s parents’ names.
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34662Here’s a bit more from the census:

All born in NY
Here’s an Orville and Frank Smith:
In 1870, Millport PO, Town of Horseheads, Chemung Co.
Series M593, Roll 915, p 357
dwelling 410, family 414
Orville Smith 56, work in Foundry

All white, born NY
And in 1860, Orange PO, Town of Hector, Schuyler Co.

December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34664Hi, Linda!
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34665Will this one post?
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34666I’m apparently forbidden to post in this thread anymore, if my browser is to be believed…
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34667…unless it’s meaningless. Apologies and info are getting me a Forbidden message.
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34668I kept being logged out for some reason – make sure you’re logged in right before you post. It hasn’t happened to me since I checked the “keep me logged in” or “remember me” or something-like-that box, but yesterday I got that Forbidden message several times – and turned out each time I wasn’t logged in again.
December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34669I tried posting several times, but I’m getting that “Forbidden” message too. My host is doing something with security, maybe that’s all it is. I’ll let him know about this.

December 21, 2009 at 4:30 pm #34672If someone had told me we were having a test I would have studied for it!
