New to the group – this looks very interesting

Hi, everyone.

I am trying to find out if the stories that I am descended from Wahanganoche are true. I have an ancestor, Col. Henry Meese, who is said to have married a daughter of Wahanganoche (probably Mary), and had a daughter named Grace. Grace Meese is said to have married John Ashton. Their daughter, Frances Priscilla, married into an Alexander family.

Where does such information usually come from? Are there any records of the marriages of Wahanganoche’s daughters to English settlers? Are some of these lines just wishes of “wannabes”? No offense to those who know they have these ancestors. It ‘sjust that some stories turn out to be romantic fantasies.

I wonder how these marriages were received by both sides. Are there any stories, records, etc.? Were they married in churches, or by tribal customs and laws, or both?

I find this all fascinating. Native American cultures in general are very interesting to me. Also, I have several lines going back to Jamestown, so the connection of the two cultures would be great to have in my family tree.
