Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hope everyone is okay. I have been taking a break on geneology. My Cannaday married a Kennett and had a lot of progress on that tracing back to the same area in Virginia in the arly 1700s and then a shift to Powhaten and essex county in MA, supposedly going back to Henry Keny, a mason and early Boston shopkeeper, but not sure this is right. Lots of fuss on this, trying to trace back to a beautiful castle in England, but many say that the geneology done in the 1800s for this line is faulty and based on assumption not reliable evidence as people paid for good geneologies back then. Everyone wanted to be royalty.
There is no record of any Kinne (which is about the oldest form of the name I can reliably trace in my family) and Keny. No one can figure out where thomas kinne came from. Very few people with a surname beginning with K came over on boats, especially early enough.
If he lived in Powhaten during the early to mid 1600s, would that likely make him Powhaten?
I had no idea my family was so old! There are Wrights and Cox on this line too.
I found an interesting article for the Cannady and Indian ancestry in the south, amazingly just 20 miles from where I now live (right near the Okefenoke)

Its an interesting story.
Any info on the early Kinne, Keney, Kinnet line would be much appreciated. It also shows up as Kenneth a few times because of how they used to write their double ts.
