Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hi all!
I am new here, and am trying to research my father’s maternal family.
I have reached a dead-end in my research as I cannot find anymore information on them.
Is anyone familiar with the surname Ross/Rose and/or Austin?
Here is the info:
Joseph Ross born 1880/1885 in Surry County VA.
Josephine/Josie Ross born 1888 in VA.
Josephine’s mother is Fannie Austin, born 1851 in Virginia.
On the 1910 Census they are listed as Mulatto, on the 1920 Census they are listed as Black, and then on the 1930 Census they are listed as living in New Jersey.
I notived on the 1910 Census report, their neighbors had the following surnames: Drew, Vaughn, Easter, Rhodes, Brown, Smith (including an Osceola Smith), Chamblis, Brooks. In the 1920 Census, the Easter family was still listed as neighbors. There was also a family with the surname Battle.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
Antonn
