I’ve been searching for the family of this woman for over 10 years. She was born about 1785 and came to Habersham and White Counties Georgia and was married to Matthew Goss and died about 1832. She was an Indian, and we always assumed that she was Cherokee but my mother wrote a letter to a Cherokee Linguist who told her that the letter or sound of “P” was not in the language of the Cherokee and the name Diaisampi may reflect Portugese.
Just today while looking for various spellings of her last name, I found a census record in 1810 for Joseph Rumbus in Currituck NC, and then I remembered an article that I had read about the Saponi Tribe. I had thought that the Saponi were only in the western states but then I found out that they were also in Virginia and North Carolina – then I found this site!
Please tell me where I can search for a tribe which may have existed in the late 1700’s! Surely there has to be something! This lady is such a puzzle.

August 10, 2010 at 6:08 am #37857Hello,
I am a direct descendant of a woman listed on geneology websites as a cherokee indian native. Her name was Diaisampi Rampus Goss after she married Matthew Goss. They were the parents of Matthew William Goss and he was the father of Milligan C. Goss, whose photograph I’ve been looking at all my life on the mantle in my granny and pawpaw’s home. I have attached this photograph.
I am desperate to help solve this mystery of Diaisampi and where she came from. Hoping to find answers and perhaps a few unknown relatives.
thanks,

August 10, 2010 at 6:08 am #37861The first GedMatch kit I listed is coming from SC in the same time frame as Diaisampi Rampas. Don’t know if you have DNA to compare.
From this area it’s more likely a Siouan-speaking tribe, not Cherokee. A lot of Catawba descendants who migrated away from SC later applied to the Guion Miller Roll. They were rejected for not being Cherokee, not because they were not Indian. But this is a reason many descendants are looking at the Cherokee instead of Catawba, Tutelo or Saponi.
You could try looking at the eastern Siouan languages (Catawba, Tutelo-Saponi, Biloxi, Ofo) to see if you can find a word or combination of words that sounds like diasampi. To md it sounds similar to some words in Siouan languages.
Like in Tutelo-Saponi ‘wehahempei’ is ‘spring’, ‘mampi isi’ is ‘bad’ or ‘evil spirit’. ‘Mampi’ sounds like the end of diaisampi. If mampi isi is literallu evil spirit it would be literally ‘spirit evil’ so mampi could mean spirit? There is no Tutelo-Saponi word recorded for ‘spirit’ to verify though. You could try browsing the Comparative Siouan Dictionary to see if any names stand out.
