Does anyone have a valid e-mail address for Forest Hazel or know how to get a message to him?
I believe my Native American great-great grandfather, John Ross Shelton Whitman (1854-1893), may have gone to “Little Texas” some time between 1870 and 1878. I have attached his photo. He may have been there with his sister Amanda Whitman, and/or his brother Milton Alby Whitman, who was considered to be a medicine man, according to one of my relatives. The Native American mother of John Ross Shelton Whitman was named Sarah Ann Brown (1816 – 1905) and his Native American grandfather was Michael A. Brown.
My Native American roots are in Rowan Co., NC from the mid-1700’s and my ancestors seem to have been Saponi that lived along the Yadkin River. My g-g grandfather apparently had a difficult time fitting into the white community in Rowan Co. as a young man, due to his mixed-blood, and sought to reconnect with the Native American community in the 1870’s. My family has a story that he spent time on a reservaton during this period, but we do not know which one. We think the “reservation” in our family story could have actually been “Little Texas.” I am wondering if there are any records from the 1870’s that could list his name. I would dearly like to know if Forest Hazel or any one else has come across any Whitmans or Browns in their research on Saponi families in NC and VA. – Thank you, Andy Whitman

August 23, 2010 at 7:54 pm #35339Hi Andy,
The only records we would have from that time period would be the 1870-80 Federal censuses for Alamance/Caswell/Orange counties. I did a quick check and did not see anyone that looked likely. It is not a name that I am familiar with historically as being associated with the community; the closest we would have would be Whitmore, and that is a pretty small family, even though it goes back to the 1760’s. Good luck.

August 23, 2010 at 7:54 pm #35546Hi Forest,
A cousin just contacted me and told me that his great grandfather (brother to my John Ross Shelton Whitman) is “buried on a reservation.” His great grandfather was “Mack” Whitman who moved from Salisbury, NC to Danville, VA to open up a barber shop in the vey late 1800’s or very early 1900’s. Danville is just 30 miles north of “Little Texas” and it seems likely that the reservation in our family stories is really Little Texas. Is there an old cemetery associated with Little Texas that could contain the remains of
McConnaughey

August 23, 2010 at 7:54 pm #35555Hi Debra, I have never been there and it is no longer called “Little Texas,” but the historical location was in Pleasant Grove Township in Alamance County, NC where the Occaneechi-Saponi tribe is located. You should be able to get more directions and information by going to the tribe’s website: http://occaneechi-saponi.org/ or by contacting the tribe directly.
