I just wanted to discuss a new DNA test that I tried in the spring. It is the Family Finder DNA test, a test that uses BOTH parents DNA, not just father or mother. The DNA researchers have discovered that people inherit blocks of DNA, called autosomal DNA, from both parents. This is a different kind of DNA than yDNA or mtDNA and is supposed to read back 5 generations. Its results come from BOTH parents.
I need to say, first, that it is pricey. I paid $250.00. It also has caused me more questions than answers. I have several matches who I do not know how they connect (several surnames from this forum, I might add). In fact, I can’t recognize their surnames in my lines. A couple are even in Europe, Finland and England.
That being said, it is the way I connected with someone who is definitely a relative, a third cousin once removed. I would not have connected without the DNA test unless we ran into each other via some of the genealogy forums. I have a female line broken by my great-grandfather.
It also led me to find out a great deal, with the help of ancestry.com, about my father’s German line, thanks to another alleged cousin who has given me information to help explore that line as we try to figure out how we might be related. With his information and ancestry.com, it is beginning to appear as if my husband and I are related :):) from connections back in Germany. My mother-in-law, who adores my children, said, “Oh, that is why your kids are like they are.” :):)
So, I just wanted to say that Family Finder DNA test worked for me at least in these two cases. You can find it on the familytreedna.com website if you are interested.

August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35351I and my parents also have tested with FTDNA and their Family Finder Test. We also tested with 23andMe and have access to their relative finder. FTDNA will probably release their new Population Finder program this week. The more folks who test the greater the chances that you’ll find genetic relatives.
August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35352I have also tested and have results for Family Finder on the FTDNA site. I would like to know if we are matches. I am listed at Brandy Bennett Jordan in results.
Thanks,
Brandy
August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35353I and my father are found under the surname Degnen and my mother Reaves-Degnen.
August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35354Darn, not a match to Degnen or Reaves-Degnen.

August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35355I am new to the Saponi site in search of my “lost” heritages…Can you please direct me to where you obtained this DNA family finder test because the cheapest I’ve seen was in the $400 range and to me, even though still expensive, $250 is much better. My interest is beyond curiosity and tired of not knowing “who I am,” but I also have physical health issues, some diagnosed, some not, I am not getting any younger and I sincerely want to get as well as I can be…
Maternal “lost” lines are as follows, from memory…Jennings, Rebecca, rep of VA c mid1700’s, mother of Gideon Jennings, Tuscawaras Co and Allen Co, OH, who married either a Grace “Day” or a Grace “Derraugh,” father uncertain but thought to be a Scotsman from VA, Dodd was one suggestion; Sylvester Thompson b c1766, NC or VA parents “John and Mary” Thompson, John d c1784; Sylvester and brother John (Jr) owned land just west of old Salem in NC, Sylvester married Mary aka Polly Seward, a dau of Samuel Seward relocated to Bracken Co, KY; Zachariah Green, b1780 NC to Darke Co, OH; John & Thomas Hill, rep of MD but possibly also lived in NC before relocating to Miami Co, OH; Long, supposedly back to a William Long of PA early to Miami Co, OH. Other interrelated non-Native Am lines are Rentsch (Rench), Pearce, Pearson, Iddings, Laughlin, Baer, Eichelberger, Cratty, English.
Paternal “lost” lines now follow: Payen/Payne rep CT/MA to VT to now Kennebec ME (Zerah William Payne m1808 Amey Feltch/Felch), Zerah’s father was rep a Samuel Payen/Payne bc1733 d1813 Zanesville, Muskingum Co, OH, but cannot verify published DAR and LDS records…this family retained the old Norman/French Payen spelling until at least 1920, residing c1816-1847 Coshocton Co, OH; 1847-186_,
Vincennes, Knox Co, Indiana, and by 1870 the widow of William Payen (rep son of Zerah Wm Payen), b c1827 Coshocton Co, OH Cathrine Markley Payen/Payne is back in Coshocton Co, OH, with 3 of 9 children. On 1900 Catherine stated only 4 of 9 children were living .
John C Young rep b NC/TN early 1800’s m 2nd Sarah Hall, KY, was a JP and also a minister in Macoupin Co, IL, their youngest Luken b1860 m Minnie Douglas Strickland dau of Samuel “Henry” Strickland and Sarah Sallee/Salley, Coles Co, IL; Luke and Minnie relocated with RR by 1900 in Springfield, Clark Co, OH.
That is all I can remember at the moment. Thanks for any suggestions/directions. I have been researching off and on since 1975. My mother has researched some on primarily her maternal lines since records have become available online…to my knowledge most of my distant cousins from any of these surnames have either given up on the research or sad to say, they have accepted fabricated lines passed down through the decades. I have one old college friend who finally found his Native Am roots, even though he was adopted as a child, and he also is mixed, or Metis which I prefer, and he has made some investigative attempts to help me but he also found nothing conclusive.

August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35359Deb,
It can make more questions. I have several matches who are as close as fourth cousins but no common surnames.

August 28, 2010 at 11:02 pm #35362Thank you, Brandy, for the information, at $300 it is still currently out of my range, but someday hopefully before too long, I will be able to send it in.
