Hi all
I am new to this site. I hope someone may have some information on these families.
John & Sarah (Knight) married August 1800-Monroe Co. Va. By 1808 they are in Mason Co. Hardesty Mason Co. History (1883) indicates that John & James Jeffers settled on Mudlick Fork of 13 Mile Creek. In court records Sept. 1809 John Jefferies and Sally his wife have to show cause why George Knight, age 11, an infant son of Sally Jefferies should not be bound out to overseer poor.
The 1887 will of Dr. Aquilla L. Knight (son of George) has a very unusual request. His wife “bury him in plain undressed plant box in any suit of my former wardrobe without funeral rights. Burial to be carried out by two or more disinterested strangers. Let there be no headstones or boards to mark the grave, and my demise to be kept secret. Should interested persons ask, wife to show his will to them.”
John & Sarah Jeffress left no wills in Mason Co. John born ca. 1772 died before 1850 Census.
Sarah ca. 1771 died before 1860 Census. Nothing in cemetery books or death/court records.
Elias prob. eldest son (1804) of John marries Catherine Grimm -1834. Again no record of death, will, or burial for the couple. Elizabeth prob. eldest dau (1802) of John marries Cary W. Norvell -1827. Nothing
Elias has daughter Nancy born ca 1838 who marries Sylvester Coleman June 1854. Elias’s oldest son Enoch born ca 1832 marries 1)Mary Ann McGuire, 2)Sarah Putney and he dies under questionable circumstances in 1863.
On the ancestry and genealogy Jeffers/Jeffries etc. message boards the native american ancestry questions are regularly posed.
I would appreciate any wisdom or knowledge you may have regarding these families.
Sherry
