Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hi can anyone tell me any info about the lumbee indians.I found some family names on the site about goins and lumbee indians of rockingham county nc. debra
There’s tons of ’em in Robeson County. I see you’re in NC. Attend one of their pow wows sometime.
The word Lumbee is derived from the Lumber River. It’s not a traditional name. It’s thought that many Natives in the end days congregated there, from many tribes. There’s a contingent today that considers itself more rightfully Tuscaroran. And I believe another contingent convinced it’s more specifically Cheraw, if I remember correctly. They are state recognized and there are many people who are working hard to resuscitate traditional culture. There are some Long Houses doing stomps. People from Six Nations have been visiting them for years, teaching culture.
They can be very friendly, they can also be rather skeptical about newcomers, there’s been a long history of scammers and charlatans looking to exploit.
