I’m looking for any information on the Manuels. They get their start in NC. My fourth great grandfather was Ephraim Manuel(1795NC). His nephew claimed my fifth great grandparents(Jesse & Beaty) were full blooded Cherokee, in his petition to join the Cherokee in 1908. According to census, they moved to TN, then IN, and then to MI. Ephraim married Julia Ann Warrick(s)/Worix. She may be partly native also. They had six children; 4 boys then 2 girls. Then while in IN, the second oldest Peter(1839TN) married an Ann Mariah Winburn(1835IN). The Winburns were also part native from North Carolina. Then the family moved to MI, along with their extended families- Cotton, Manuel, and Winburn. Peter and Ann had 3 children. Peter enlisted and was assigned to the Michigan 1st Cavalry Company K during the Civil War. Peter died after 8 months. Then the fourth Manuel, Daniel, joined the following year. Daniel served in the Michigan 3rd Cavalry Company H for two years. Then when he came home, he married his brother’s widow, Ann. They had two children. Peter’s youngest child George Thomas Manuel(1861) grew up in Calhoun County, MI. He married the 3rd child of James and Maria(Peek/peake) Mahoney, Ida(1862). George and Ida had 7 children. The family has pretty much stay in and around Calhoun County. The second to youngest Anna Mariah(1897MI) married Morris Lester Brown(1897). They had 4 children; Almeta, Chester, Bonnie, and Donald. Donald was my maternal grandfather.
The Winburns are from NC. John Winburn, according to local legend, married a local Native American. I know they had at least two boys, Thomas and David. One of them had a son named Thomas(1791NC). Thomas marries the granddaughter of Benjamin James, Anny James. They and a large number of other members of their community moved to Ripley, Rush County, IN(1830s). Many families were black, white and native American. Thomas and Anny had 7/8 children. Some moved on to Van Buren County, Michigan, some stayed in Indiana.
George Peak(e) most likely related to the Chief “Jeremy Peake”. [
April 9, 2012 at 10:41 pm #36140George Peak(e) most likely related to the Chief “Jeremy Peake”. If you want my reasoning behind that, just ask. He was born in Maryland 1722. Married a black woman named Hannah. They moved to Pensylvania. Then to Ohio, be some of the first settlers in/near Cleveland. They had 4 sons. George Jr married a woman named Hannah and had 3 children. His middle child Henry married his cousin Hannah Peak. Henry and Hannah had 5 children. The2nd, Maria(1839OH) married James Mahoney; son of James and Elizabeth (Siser/Sisco) Mahoney. Maria and James’ daughter Ida, married George Thomas Manuel, son of Ann & Peter Manuel.<if you="" want="" my="" reasoning="" behind="" that,="" just="" ask.]="" he="" was="" born="" in="" maryland="" 1722.="" married="" a="" black="" woman="" named="" hannah.="" they="" moved="" to="" pensylvania.="" then="" ohio,="" be="" some="" of="" the="" first="" settlers="" near="" cleveland.="" had="" 4="" sons.="" george="" jr="" hannah="" and="" 3="" children.="" his="" middle="" child="" henry="" cousin="" peak.="" 5="" the2nd,="" maria(1839oh)="" james="" mahoney;="" son="" elizabeth="" (siser="" sisco)="" mahoney.="" maria="" james'="" daughter="" ida,="" thomas="" manuel,="" ann="" &="" peter="" manuel.
April 9, 2012 at 10:41 pm #36141Google: “The Croatan Indians of Sampson County” It should help you locate an online book which deals in part with the Emanuels/ Manuels who descent from Ep Manuel. If you have problems, email me at fhazel@mebtel.net
April 9, 2012 at 10:41 pm #36146Unfortunately, I can’t connect my line to that line definitely. I kind of hit a wall. I don’t really think they are related, but they could be. My guess would extremely distant cousins. Then there’s the nephew of my GGGG-grandfather who says they’re Cherokee but the other Manuels are saying they’re Croatan/Manteo. According to Enoch Manuel, retold by George Butler, Ephraim’s father is Nicholas. My Ephraim is son of Jesse. All I can find is random tidbits here and there & George Butler’s booklet.
Jesse Manuel m Beaty Revel
Ephraim b1795 NC, James 1810NC, Mahala 1814NC, Elkana1815NC, Levi 1815NC, Sylvania 1816NC, Travis 1818NC
Jesse & Beaty and Travis’ family moved to Greene County, TN from Madison Co, NC around 1851. Then at the same time Ephraim and James’ families move to Cocke Co, TN with a large group of others also claiming to be Cherokee.
