Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I began my ancestry research at a young age. My interest in all the people who made me was birthed when my grandpa on my dads side told me his grandma was full blooded Blackfoot “Indian”.
It was fortunate for me to start at such a young age as to have opportunity to question my grandparents.
In doing so, I discovered my moms side also. It was rumored they also had native blood, but I’ve found that harder
to verify than my dads side, with no solid leads.
I did find it curious however, to know that my moms mom had one of her grandmothers often take her as a child to a secret women’s meeting called the “Pocahontas club” in Kosciusko County Indiana. Being my grandmother was a child
it would have roughly been around the 1930s give or take.
In doing searches for this, I’ve come up with conflicting identities, such as charity/rights groups, a Cherokee women’s group, and clear back to revolutionary American tea party groups, political groups, and all sorts through the years…
I have come to the conclusion that this group my gg grandma attended was likely more political than ethnic, but either way, they felt the need to do meetings in hiding. Women’s suffrage perhaps? With so many different groups carrying this title, its still a mystery to me.
Does anyone here have any knowledge of this group? Ever heard of it? I would like to hear your stories.
