I’ll start this thread and add more later. I have fresh deer hides that I need to attend to right now.
1767 John Meadows work on road with Joseph Shearing between Jumping Gut and Hub Quarter bridge intersecting the Halifax Road
1772 John Meadows work on road from Burnt Ordinary to Col Thomas Eaton’s ferry, crossing Reedy Swamp up ridge between stone house and Hub Quarter to Halifax Road.
Can we place any of these locations geographically? They should be in current Warren Co, NC but in 1770 would have been Bute Co, Babtist or Little Fishing Creek district.
So getting the NC atlas out of car and knowing where to look, I see Fishing Creek and Little Fishing Creek. Fishing Creek stays west and south of Little Fishing Creek. Little Fishing Creek has headwaters at Macon and Vaughan on 158. A Reedy Creek comes into it from the west just before it crosses 4 just south of 561, passes through Medoc Mtn State Park continues almost due south until it joins Fishing Creek at the Halifax/Nash Co line. Fishing Creek IS the county line eastward on into Edgecombe Co.
All I can say is wow and double wow. Black Coyote, I am eternally in your debt. I can’t express the magnitude of this breakthrough. The Meadows are a pivotal family in these mixed-blood migrations. They are currently “white” and “black” with the same ancestors. Multiple families with the same names stayed here, went to GA, TN, KY, TX, and other points all at the same time!!! (Makes me wonder if some euro name-sharing was going on 😉 It is the line that first led me into genealogy and the stubbornest brick wall. It’s starting to crumble.
A fall line runs through Warren and Halifax counties. All water to the north and east flows into the Roanoke River. The water to the west and south flows into the Tar River.
Just north across the “ridge” from the headwaters of Little Fishing Creek is the headwaters of Big Stone House Creek (now flowing north into Lake Gaston) Just northwest of that creek is Eaton’s Ferry Road (4). I can’t find a current creek called Hubb Quarter Creek but a couple of deeds that google brought up mention Hubb Quarter Creek and I found a housing development on Lake Gaston called Hubb Quarter. Knowing the propensity for naming developments for what they replace, it helps place the location of the name. This all places the beginning point of the road overseen by John Meadows as the ferry crossing on the Roanoke just north of Vaughan going southeast to “the Halifax road”. My guess would be that 561 is the Halifax road and the overseen road was roughly where 4 runs from ferry to Brinkleyville. Research will continue.
Burnt Ordinary and Jumping Gut are still a mystery.
Col William Eaton of VA bought a substantial amount of land in Lord Granville’s part of NC. When he moved about 40 Saponi from Fort Christana joined him in what would become Halifax/Warren. Almost all of his children marry people with surnames commonly suspected of being mixed-blood. Thomas Eaton who owned the ferry was his son. I suspect some on those Saponi were part of the first migration to GA carrying fresh euro names.
