Proto-Dakotan Swadesh list word #65
*Wahurii, boneThis is one of the easier ones to reconstruct, because there are fewer words than languages here, and they are all similar. The word for bone is /Hu/ in Dakota and Hochak, /Wahu/ in Tutelo, Kaw and Chiwere, /Aho/ in Ofo and Biloxi, and /Wahii/ in Quapaw, Omaha, and Osage.
Crow /Hulii/, Hidatsa /Hidu/ and Mandan /Wahuree/ show evidence of the last syllable after the -hu-. I assume this last syllable was /*-ri/ because of the other forms ending in i.
Even Rankin got this one as PS *Wahure (*Wahuree), same as the Mandan word, but differing from my reconstruction only in the last vowel.1 WOCCON ?

*Washinri, fatThe term for fat (noun as in lard, animal fat) is /Washiin/ in 6 languages according to my sources: Quapaw, Kaw, Osage, Chiwere, Dakota and Nakota. There are vestiges of a third syllable in Ofo, Biloxi (-ii), the other Quapaw word (-hii), Hidatsa, Crow (-wii) and Mandan (-ree).Based on this I got the proto-form *Washiinrii (Washinri) to mean ‘fat’.

16 CROW /Shiiwii/ ^Rankin gave the form as /Shiin/ rather than /Washiin/ for most of these languages, and as a result his version of this proto-word is *Shinre (as in Mandan), ‘fat, tallow’.

*Winktsa, eggThe Tutelo-Yesan word given for ‘egg’, /Pos/, seems to be connected with the word /Bush/ meaning ’round’ (from *Poroshka).
Catawba /Wo’keno/ may be connected with Catawba /Witkan/, chicken…All the remaining languages have a similar form that I traced back to *Winktsa (or in the case of Quapaw and Mandan, *Wajinkedetska-winktsa, bird + egg)

Proto-Dakotan Swadesh list word #68
*Anxee, hornThis one seems easy, since the word is /Hee/ in 7 languages and /Ahee/ in another 2, then there is Mandan /Ansee/ and Hidatsa /Azii/. Of the remaining words, Yesan /Tabiike/ and Quapaw /Deeha/ could conceivably include some part of the same original word, but Crow /Po/ probably has a different origin altogether.
Rankin considered *Ahe (*/Ahee/) to be the original form for “horn”, except for Mandan and Hidatsa, he says are from a different proto-Siouan word */Anshee/ “horn, spoon, shell”. I would still guess there was only one word here originally for “horn”, the evidence of an S sound does suggest *Anshee, but not widespread enough to be certain, so I settled on *Anxee (with a raspy sound)
