Jno. Good, Humfrey Osburn, Herkolus an Indian, a negro man[?] – 4
Benja. & Benja. Harrison jr., Silas Smith, Tho: Haynes, an Indian wo:, 15 negroes – 20
OK…question, looking at the way this info is presented, just as is in the book, what do you guys get. Thomas and Jeffrey Busby owned Geo Peters and Con Indian or that all four were owned property in the tithables, what?
I believe this is my so many greats grandfather from Surry County, VA
It seems like the first line is listing four tithables. Were slaves tithable? I’ve never been clear on what a “tithable” was. Someone who paid taxes? But how can a slave pay taxes? Was there a tax due on this person, which the owner was liable for? Is that what it meant?
To Rosebudsaponi,
What book are you looking in that has the information on the Busby, Peters, & other’s?

Those were records out of Surry County, VA. I live just the next county over from Surry so I can access their data anytime. Is there anything you need me to look?
Peters is a line I’ve been chasing for sometime now. Surry, Sussex, Southampton, Greensville counties VA and Northampton, Halifax and Wilson Counties, NC.
Are any of those I listed on the Tithables your names?
