If I lived back East I’d be there! š
I periodically ask the followin’ question. I have a couple of ancestors whose middle name was “Hoten” and I noticed your name “Hutton”. Have you ever seen a derivation of your suranme similar to the way my ancestors spelled their name, “Hoten.”?
Just thought I’d ask.
thanks —

I collected my last name from my ex-husband. It broke up the crazy collection of J’s. Since it was the best thing I could get from him after the divorce – I kept the surname.
I recently visited with a gentleman from the Eastern Shore of Maryland that told me that his family came from an area known as Holden Creek. He when using his Eastern Shore Accent sounded like he was saying HOTEN or HOLTEN. I don’t know if that gives you a deeper clue. Mr. Holden told me that his father was 1/2 Cherokee. I always ask for photos when people make these statements and he went and got a picture of his father. There is no doubt that his father was of Indian ancestry. It further supported the notion that there were Cherokee among tribes on the East Coast. They lived among the Nanticoke, Assateague, Pocomoke and Indian River Indians on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia.
Thanks for writing…hope that maybe you can make it down sometime to the Pow Wow’s in the area. Next weekend the Accohannack Pow Wow will be held at Bending Water in Marion Station, Maryland. I will attend that Pow Wow. Last weekend I attended the Assateague Pow Wow on Assateague Island in Maryland. It was rather interesting.
