We were at the Taste of Brunswick festival in Lawrenceville, VA (site of Fort Christanna) today and ran into Walt Brown. He’s running for state senate, so if anybody’s in the 18th VA senatorial district, you should check him out.
He’s the Chief of the Nottoway, and he’s been doing tons of research on southeast Virginia Indian history for years. He told me last year that he saw some documentation about a group of southside VA tribes going to the Colonial government to inform them that they would be banding together for strength and calling themselves the “Blackfoot.”
He thought he saw it in the Executive Journals, but I couldn’t find it there. Today he mentioned he did a lot of research while he was in England. I asked him if maybe that’s where he saw the Blackfoot reference and he said that could be it. He says he can still see that paragraph in his mind’s eye and is sure it exists.
I know that there are a lot of records on the Colonies that were taken back to England that are unknown here. I have a friend who did some great research on the Tuscarora war for a dissertation that way.
Maybe someday . . .
October 12, 2003 at 1:35 am #7944He said he believes the tribes listed were the Occoneechee, Saponi, Catawba and Nansanticos. The Nansanticos were deported in 1699 I believe it was. I wrote about it on here somewhere. The documents I saw relative to any Sapony banding together for strength with others were around 1713, so I don’t know what to make of it.
October 12, 2003 at 1:35 am #7945That was July, 1705 when the Nansiotico were transported and the 13 children left in the tribe indentured to the Colonial council members.

October 12, 2003 at 1:35 am #7950Linda, that could account for Blackfoot Town, Md, for the Blackfoot Church in Indiana, and stories of people who say their ancestors were Blackfoot . . .
If you can find that documentation — wow . . .! 🙂
good luck.
