Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My mother’s paternal line is descended from Chester {photo shown in the attachment} and Lucinda Lewis, grandparents of the late celebrity chef Edna Lewis, who claimed her great-grandmother was a full-blooded Native American. My mother triangulates with other descendants of them with them as the common ancestors. They were former slaves and my mom and I inherited a 32cM Native American segment from Chester. Oral Lewis family lore states a Native American connection; that there was a raid on an indian encampment and two Native American infants were found and adopted by the slaves who went through the aftermath. We share 16cMs of this 32cM segment with the descendants of Frank Austin, born in Kentucky, whose lore state his mother was stolen from her tribe and give to slaves to be raised. Chester Lewis’ death certificate lists his mother as Sarah Smith, born in orange county, VA. Our closest DNA matches on this segment are the Bullock family, who match at 27-29cMs on this large native segment, came from Virginia {unspecified location} and allegedly reported “Blackfoot indian ” roots.
I suspect this connection is eastern siouan. If anyone has any info, tips or advice to share, I would appreciate it. Feel free to respond. If there’s any autosomal Saponi-related DNA projects, I would be VERY interested!
