Hello everyone….I wanted to enlist some help in trying to learn more about this “new” ancestor of mine. To explain how I came to locate him: when I went to the Ft. Ancient Gathering I was fortunate to meet some cousins and others that likely natively connect with my tree (and I had a fabulous time besides!)…I walked over to a vendor booth and noticed a number of books written by Richard & Vicki Haithcock…so I grabbed a random book and opened it to a random page and lo and behold there on that page was a death certificate with my 3rd great grandfather’s name on it….needless to say I was both stunned and thrilled at the same time…I had never before seen a death certificate with his name upon it….it was a joyous moment. The death certificate reads as follows:
(State of Ohio) Abraham Nickols, male, black, married, DOD 1/4/1915 (which happens to be my birthdate too), DOB: 11/24/1863, place of burial: Carmel, 1/5/1915, Undertaker: O.R. Kearns, Bainbridge, OH, occupation: farmer, birthplace: U.S., name of father: State Nickols, born in U.S., mother: not known, born in KY, cause of death: Organic Heart Disease, place of death: Pike County, OH, Perry Twp, informant: W. Nichols of Cynthiana, OH.
I/we never before knew about this son of State’s….I am still rather shocked….and thus far I have been perfectly unable to locate this Abraham in census records or other documents…nor his wife (he shows as married at the time of death) nor any possible children he may have had. Our records show State’s wife as Nancy Jane nee Gibson. This son, Abraham makes the number of children of State (and likely Nancy as well) now amount to 15….listed in birth order as: William (my direct line), Abner Jackson “Jack”, Sterling/Starland, James R., Martha J/I?, Esquire C. “Squire”, Jackson, Sallie/Sally, Candy “Canada”, Cooney Andrew “Andy”, George W., Jane, Logan, Sarah & Abraham. There is some speculation that perhaps State may have had more than one wife however he does not show on any census record with any other woman…he is either with Nancy or alone…and in cnsus year 1870…he shows twice…once in Wilmington, Clinton County….and once in Brushcreek, Highland County…both in OH.
As an aside…we just this week ordered Y-DNA test kits for 2 distinct Nichols direct male descendants….both of these men descend from two different but believed to be very closely related Nichols lines….1 cousin is from my direct male line via State and Nancy (Gibson) Nichols….and the other cousin descends from the Nichols line that includes Joseph Nichols and his wife Naomi “Oma” nee Collins….both lines lived together or in close proximity…migrated together….worked together and married into the same families and also shared many common names for subsequent generations.
Thank you much in advance for any input or help any of you can provide on behalf of this ellusive new great great grand uncle. Best of luck to all in your own genealogical endeavors. Blessings~~~Laurie
July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #27602In trying to “dig” further for this Abraham…I noted that the OH Historical Society Death Certificate online ordering site lists his name as: Abraham Nickolas….vol#1554, cert #4711.
I have seen a few Nichols documents whereby their surname is shown as: Nicholas. Take care~~~Laurie
July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #27780I saw that spelling difference, too.
I haven’t been able to find any other but Abraham, son of William, of which you’re aware. Sorry.

July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #27832Thanks for digging Bill….we too are at a stalewort on locating Abraham….in looking back at the one census he is on (in the HH of William and Susan)…he appears to be perhaps too old to be the son of them both…and too I wonder because he is living riight next door to State if he was simply a younger brother to that William…which confounds me moreso because the other William (my GG gpa) is in State’s HH…so maybe there were in fact 2 sons named William? I suppose that isn’t too far fetched for that to occur no? I do have 2 sons for State with like-names already: Abner Jackson, called Jack who MD a Blevins gal….and Jackson, also sometimes called Jack who MD a Perkins gal. Nor have I been able to sufficiently locate the Charles/Charlie living in the HH along with Abraham. Obviously, I’ll keep looking and hope that something finds me. Thanks again for taking a stab at it. Blessings~~~Laurie
July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #27833“Double-dittoes” on most of that.. I can’t help thinking that for the number of census years he would have lived, “Abraham” may have been a middle name or he went by his middle name later… you know what I’m pointing at..
July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #28742I am related through Stanton Nichols’ son, Squire, and his wife, Clarissa Gibson and their son, Harland’s wife, Hulda E. Burris. Hilda’s brother, John Lester Burris married Mattie Jane Gibson, daughter of Clarissa Gibson and her first husband,William Garfield Gibson. Their daughter, Mary F. Burris married Floyd Carder who was my grandpa Wilbur Silas (Nick) Carder’s first cousin. Floyd’s parents were Joseph E. Carder and Laura M. Eaton. Their son, Herbert Carder married Ruby D. Howard, daughter of Russell D. Howard and Rebecca Mann. Floyd and Herb’s brother, David Nathan Carder married Freda Grace Alexander, daughter of Charles D. Alexander and Mary Etta Lyles. Brother, William Carder married Vickie E. (Veacha) Perkins, daughter of Samuel Wallace Perkins and Luvina Hammonds. Sister, Gladys M. Carder married Elziel L. Risner, son of Wilmore (William) Risner and Elizabeth Burnett. Gladys was also married to Burke Valentine. Sister, Sylvia Irene (Sib) Carder married Leslie A. Bailey, son of Willis Bailey and Clara Draper. Joseph Carder’s parents were John Mahlon Carder, parents unknown, and Eliza Jane Dobbins, daughter of William Dobbins and Mary Goldsberry whose Indian name was Gooseberry. Their son, Nathan Isaac Carder was my great grandfather. He married Sophia McFarland and Mary Alice Alford, widow of Albert Rider. Their son, John Frank Carder’s son, John Elmer Carder married Lillian Mount, whose parents were Frank C. Mount and Carrie Hill, daughter of Caton Hill and Martha Evans. Caton was the son of Charles Green Hill and descended from the Hills, Butts, and Greens of Johnstown, Licking County, Ohio. I watn to thank Laurie for filling in some of my blanks.
July 25, 2007 at 4:15 pm #28886Just read the thread, but with those surnames ( Many within the Melungeon Community) and being in Highland County, I would check out websites and info realted to Carmel Inidians. Perkins/Nichols/Gibsons in Highland County OHio are all Carmel Indian names. Tari
