I’ve reached a sticking point with tracking 2 of my ancestors;they are a father and daughter.
The father was Allen Taylor. He is my gg grandfather, father’s side. He’s said to have been FB Mattaponi from West Point/King Wiliam,VA.He worked on water;whether he was a fisherman, sailor,or merchant marine I’m not sure.My late g-aunt said that he developed tuberculosis and my g-grandmother didn’t want him to stay with her family because she had small children and was concerned about spreading the disease to them.He reportedly “went back to his people”;might even be buried on the res.
Some think his name may have been “George Allen” or “Allen George”
Taylor”.Wife’s name was Elizabeth.
My father’s sister says that a 1st cousin of her and my father once took a
picture of Mr. Taylor to school to show to some skeptical AA schoolmates whereupon said photo was lost.
My g-grandmother,Allen’s daughter,was Nellie Taylor,b-1872,probably
in Middlesex County,VA,died December,1974,Trenton,NJ,age 102 years.
Some say Nellie may have lived in Baltimore City/County,MD as a young girl.
Nellie married my g-grandfather,William Benjamin “Willie” Carter and
shows on the 1890 Census,Middlesex County,VA,Saluda District and subsequent censuses.
I knew Nellie as a youth;she died when I was 19 yrs old.
A few months ago,I saw pictures of both Willie and Nellie Carter as middle-aged individuals. She was brown complected, kinky haired, with strong
NA facial features.
I haven’t found any paper on Nellie (Taylor) Carter prior to her association with William Carter and 0 paper on Allen Taylor.
Thanks for your help!

These Carters are indexed in 1900 as “Cater” but are “Carter” on the actual 1900 Middlesex Co., Va census.
District 57 Saluda Twp; 25 June; Sheet 9A; household 159:
CARTER, Willie B; Oysterman; B, m, June 1871, 28, m’d 9 yrs; Va, Va, Va
………, Nellie; Wife; B, f, July 1873, 26, m’d 9; 5 childr./4 living; Va, Va, Va.
………, Robert C; son; B, m, Sept 1890, 9; Va, Va, Va.
………, Mattie L.; dau; B, f, Oct 1892, 7; Va, Va, Va.
………, Missie D.; dau; B, f, Nov 1896, 3; Va, Va, Va.
………, Purley; dau; B, f, April 1899, 1; Va, Va, Va.
Missie & Purley are missing from the 1910 census and Nellie G. Carter is listed as having had 8 children with 6 living.
Still looking for the Taylor and Carters in 1880 and earlier.

Those from 1900 sound like my family.I’ve heard of “Aunt Mattie” from my
father and “Robert C” was my late grandfather.
Contrary to the census,Robert C. Carter was born 9/15/1890,died 1978,age
87 yrs.

Found the death certificate for said Nellie Taylor Carter. She was born in Baltimore (1872)
and died in Trenton (Mercer CO),NJ 12/24/1974. Was daughter of Elizabeth Johnson.
May have found some paper on her (Nellie’s) father,Allen Taylor,(gg-grandfather to me) who family claims was FB Pamunkey. (Can’t completely rule out Mattaponi/Upper Mattaponi.) There’s an Allen Taylor listed in the 1890 Baltimore City Directory as a “mariner”. Found that on Ancestry.com. My family says Taylor was a merchant marine.
