I’m new here but I’ve taken up the quest to try and trace my Dad’s side of our family. He was always told there was some Indian in the family. The only tribe name he was sure he heard was Blackfoot, which I realize can be over used and misplaced but I have to start somewhere.
I have family from North & South Carolina & Georgia that moved into Tenn & Ark and then on to Texas. What is the best place to start to look into possible connections?
What I have: Dicy Morgan 1825, NC married Joseph Jennings 1823, GA. They had at least 6 children one of which was Henry.
Also Cornelius Thomas 1830, TN married Orpha (possible Hannas) 1824, NC or SC.
This is one line we know there was Indian on but do not know much about. All the info I have comes from the couple census I have found them on.
Other names on my family tree: Steenson, McClung, Wasson, Odell & Orrell. One ggg-grandmother was know as America Jane but nothing else is known about her other than she was supposed to be pure blood Indian.
Can anyone direct me to good places to research? I have access to ancestry and footnotes but have not made any positive IDs in Indian records yet. All help is appreciated.

Go ahead and do your regular ancestry research, but don’t expect to find any corroboration on the Indian aspect. You’ll find that they were either enumerated as black, mulatto or white. Those were the only choices available. Our people were de-tribalized long before there was a US to make treaties with, and it’s only in connection with treaty rights that people were noted to be Indian. Those of our people who did not choose to become Cayuga and migrate north, would have had to blend in wherever they were.
Use the search feature here to find others with those surnames (you’ll find them) and locations and read up on all that’s been found. Most of the research is summarized here, http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm. There’s a lot of information here. I don’t know of any other place doing what we are with this.
Rick Haithcock believes he’s found Saponi (Blackfoot) families with the Morgan name. His books are in a sticky thread, I think on this forum. I’ve seen the Jennings name in Indian families in the Upper South. Some say the Thomas name can be Tuscarora. It may be good to immerse yourself in a lot of the names posted about here before you do your Ancestry tracking, since you may want to note who your family’s neighbors were. You may find some interesting patterns.
Welcome! And thanks for sharing.
