My great-great-great grandparents were William Bouldin (Bowling) and Joanna Collins of Patrick Co., Virginia. Joanna’s father was Edward (aka Ned) & mother was Hannah (from NC). They lived in the Peters Creek area of Patrick Co. VA, between Absolam Collins (Joanna’s much older brother?) and Elisha Collins. Think this Edward was in Stokes Co census of 1810. Hannah died in PCVA in 1875. Think that’s the only death record I have found. I’d love to find out more about them.
In the 1850 census, Edward (Ned) and Hannah have William Hahone and John Bridgeman living with them. Maybe they are familiar to someone? They are a few spaces from Norman and Mary Going, mulatto farmers. So far, my folks have been listed as white on the censuses that list race, but nearly everyone in my family appears to live a couple doors down from black or mulatto labeled neighbors. Not sure if that is significant or not.
According to my aunts, both my grandmother from this line (Mattie Bouldin) and my grandfather (Her husband, Howard Foley) were “part-Indian”. I thought they were both Cherokee, but am not sure anymore.
In addition to this tradition, my grandmother had a painting of one of her American Indian relatives, who she said “lived on a reservation.” I had no idea it would become such a puzzle later. Nobody seems to know where that painting went or which reservation. Maybe she meant village?
I’m from Henry Co., Virginia & live in NC. Most of my family still lives in various New River counties.
Here are some of the other names whose roots intertwine:
Branch, Foley, Anderson, Ross, Cannaday, Goard, Harbour, Cronk, Turner, Daniel, Thomas, Nowlin, Joyce…
I have old photos of my g-grandparents (Foley and Bouldin) and her parents (Bouldin/Collins and Foley).
Thank you.

April 10, 2007 at 7:43 pm #25797I found some other researchers’ work, but much of it is undocumented.
At least through it I did find what appears to be my Ned and Hannah, living with their son in the 1860 Stokes County, NC census. The son’s name is either Leaton or Seton, depending on the interpretation of the census scribble. I reckon their “property” must have been right on the state line or possibly was located in both VA and NC, since they appear in Stokes or Patrick County alternately.
The other people in the house in 1860 (all Collinses) were Leaton’s wife Sallie (age 57), Eliza (18), Levi (20), William (18), Edward (12), Martha (10). My Ned and Hannah were around 80 years old. Elisha was about 85 and on the Patrick County VA census that year..
I remember that someone here was looking for a Drury Collins? In the 1850 Stokes Co census, there’s a Drury T. (age 18) and an Elizabeth J. (age 17) Collins listed in Leaton’s household.
Are these names familiar to any of you?
The other researcher has Edward’s wife as Hannah Holt, which makes sense. They lived next to the (Francis) Holt family. But so far, I have not ran across an actual marriage record.
April 10, 2007 at 7:43 pm #25798Since we can’t seem to find Edward & Hannah’s marriage recorded, I’m not sure how the researcher went about connecting them to the following line, but this info may prove helpful to someone.
They list my Edward as the son of William Collins and Martha “Patsy” Snell. They do seem to have found actual dates for this William’s marriage (Orange Co., VA) and death (Stokes Co., NC). The list of their children is:
Edward
Elisha (with an actual marriage date in Albermarle Co to Hannah Uptegroves) This is the Elisha whose PCVA will has been posted in many places.
Frances (md David Holt)
Mary
Malinda (md to Joseph Burch)
Micajah
William Jr.
Reuben
Lydia
Then William was said to have married a second wife and had two more sons:
Thomas (died in Stokes CO)
James Jackson
This particular William’s parents were Thomas Collins and Susannah Wyatt of Albermarle Co, VA.
There’s a bunch more info listed, if anyone is interested. Much of it gives actual dates & places for birth, death, marriage.
April 10, 2007 at 7:43 pm #25800This info is about Elisha Collins. The info for his children does match the PCVA marriage record transcriptions I have printed out. It lists his father as William, but does not specify which William.

The one detail I question is his wife Hannah’s people. In the 1850 census for Patrick County, Hannah’s place of birth is listed as Tennessee, not Pennsylvania.
