Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
I have just discovered this forum, after doing an internet search for Blackfoot. After reading information about the Saponi type, I believe that this must the group that is referenced in our family lore. I wish that I knew more about my background. (In fact, that is why I am here!) I was born in Upstate New York, not too far from the Pa line. Family lore says that there were two Indian women in our history on my father’s side of the family. My mom is looking more into this to see what specific info she can find out. All I have right now is that a certain Abraham Lott, (whose family came from the northern Pa area) supposedly had a wife from the Blackfoot tribe. He was also either descended from a mixed-union (Indian-Caucasion) or each of his parents were. This is where it gets a bit muddled. Unfortunately, the best we have right now for a name for his wife is “Betty”. I will give more info when it becomes available. However, family lore says that because of his mixed heritage, and the fact that he married an Indian (and possibly also a white woman at the same time), when he died they refused to allow him to be buried in the cemetary, so his body was placed in a roadside grave. Does anyone know how I could find out more info about this? Thanks!
