Hello,
I am looking for anyone who may be related to or have any knowledge of a Kila/susan Ashe Born 1827. This was my oldest traceble female ancestor from who I inherited my Native American Mitochondria DNA. She was listed on a 1880 census and I have a copy of her marriage certificate (1871) to John Kendall. They were listed as Colored in Anson county, North Carolina. KIla was listed on the 1880 census as wife of John kendall. Thier daughter was my GGgrandmother, Malinda ashe Johnson. It seems as though John was not her true father. I also found Kila (Susan Ashe)possibly listed on a census from 1850 (Born also 1827) as a free woman of color, head of household with two “mulatto children” in Guildford, NC. The mulatto son, ten years later ath the age of 17 on the 1860 census was living in the household of a Head white male?
Any info or people who have similar ancestors will be appreciated.

The Susan Ashe in 1850 Guilford Co., NC census is not the head of that household. The head of household was the last entry on the previous page.
P.411B & p. 412A, 26 Aug, Northern District:
Family 572:
America Ashe, 75, female, $0, (born) Guilford County
Susan Ashe, 27, f, Guilford County
Thomas C., 7, male, Guilford County
Martha, 3, f, Guilford County.
The only Ashe family there in 1840 is p.308:
Henry Ash – FPC
2 males 10 to 24.
1 male 55 to 100.
2 females 10 to 24
1 female 55 to 100.
1830 Guilford Co., p.209:
Henry Ash – FPC
1 male under 10
1 male 10 to 24
1 male 36 to 55
2 females under 10
1 female 36 to 55
…………………………………
On the 1870 Anson Co., NC census, P.O. & Twp Wadesboro; 30 June; p.29 & 30; Family 210:
KENDALL, John, 55, male, Farmer, NC.
………….., Caroline; 49, female, NC
………….., Juda (Julia?), 14, f, NC
………….., Ann M., 5, f, NC (same as “Anna”, 14, on 1880 census)
………….., Joseph, 3, m, NC. (same as “Joe”, 13, on 1880 census)
How are you associating Kila Ashe Kendall in Anson Co., with Susan Ashe up in Guilford Co.?
Bill
November 15, 2005 at 8:48 am #17560Dear Bill,
I just read this. The second family you had listed under John Kendall is not realted to me! This may have been John Kendalls previous Family. He married my GGGgrandmother in 1871. I have the marriage Certificate. It was sent to me by the Geneaologist that I worked with. She had Already had my GGgrandmother Malinda. So this was not his Blood Daughter. On her Marriage certificate She went by Malinda Ashe Johnson. She may have had her fathers surname or she herself was previously married also. (Malinda)
In 1880 Kila is listed on the cenus as his wife and John Kendall is Head of household. I associated this Susan with Kila because She may have been previously living in Guilford County and relocated to Anson County. They were born the exact same year of 1827. Both her Children were also listed as Mulattos like my GGgrandmother Malinda and her children in following Generations.
Also during that period, People went by different names. This is what we discovered. My GGgrandmother went by Malinda, Linda, Lindy.
So that answers your question. I did not look at the previous page though. That only gives me more insight. So It is possible for Kila who previously could have lived in Guilford in 1850 to wind up in anson county some twenty years later (1871) married to John Kendall who had a previous family??? That was definitely possible.
I will check the previous page that you showed.
Thanks Bill!

Kila Ashe parents are llisted as unknown on the marriage certificate and dose not list her place of birth only as NC.
Whatever the case may be this requires further investigation. I am fairly new to this and didn’t think to navigate back to the previous page of the census. Like I said Kila is where I inherited my Native American Ancestry. I have to speak to my mother again. These Ashe free people of color were listed as free going back into the 1830’s. There may be a link I have to look into more records ect. This information may be very helpful to me.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
