Does anyone have information on these surnames. I am trying to verify Saponi connection that I have heard from other sources to John Austin, Hannah Honor Love, Mary Maybe or McBee, Zachariah Austin, William Austin, Joseph Champness Austin.
Can anyone help??

October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32519I just found out I am a descendant of her’s too. My great grandmother is Ruth Lee (Dye) Hill.. So, now what do we do?
October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32520As far as the Federal Government is concerned, nobody is a Saponi Indian. It’s not a federally recognized tribe. If you all who can undeniably tie to Hannah Love and John Austin had all lived in the same small town for the last two hundreds years, gone to the same church, same school and banded together through the generations while you were ostracized as “non-whites” who nonetheless never fit into any black community, then you’d have a shot at federal recognition. There are communities who did that, but none of them have any solid pedigree back to one of the meer six people noted as Saponi Indians in official records. There’s a big tribe of Haliwa Saponi who are clearly Indian blooded by majority, by the logic of “Who’s buried in Grant’s tomb?” are likely Saponi but they don’t have that paper trail.
Just out of curiosity, where have your families been through the generations since Hannah Love?
October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32523My twig on the tree came from there and eventually landed in Kansas. My family came from tenn., then ark., then okla., then kansas. Her name if Ruth Lee Dye if you want to look it up..
October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32594My couple of Love folk were in western NC- Macon and surrounding areas; don’t know if it helps you.

October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32595I know a lady who did some fascinating research concerning her Tuscarora heritage. She found her people in Bertie County, NC, then followed them through a number of generations as they moved out to Oklahoma. What was astonishing was that she noticed that it wasn’t just her family moving thataway. It was an entire community moving together across the country over a number of decades. The same collection of surnames, I’m thinking it was about a dozen or so, were all there in Bertie county, and they all ended up I believe it was Oklahoma, in the same town, together, many years later. Now that’s a pretty persistent community.
The shame of it was that it ended up with a generation that went out of its way to deny what so much effort had been put into keeping together.
Anyway, take a look and see if you notice a similar pattern. We might actually find a bona fide Saponi community with an undeniable paper trail.
October 14, 2002 at 10:18 pm #32686has anyone come up with anything new on John Austin sr. I haven’t been able to find any pictures or documents on John and his decendants
