Has anyone heard of a blackfoot reservation in Monticello Ky? My great, great, great grandfather was blackfoot and supposedly left the reservation and took the last name of West. I am able to trace back 3 generations and then I hit a wall, on my great, great, great grandmothers side, she was choctaw from a reservation in Tx. She too, left the reservation and met my grandfather in Ky. They married in Wayne County Ky (Monticello). I am totally lost as to what to do next. Anywho, if anyone happens to know anything about the reservation any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jene
June 14, 2006 at 6:12 pm #21796I have Johnson and Stodghill descendants from Wayne County, KY.
Collins family from Bell and Knox counties, KY.
I’ve never heard of any Choctaw Reservations in Kentucky or Texas.
I live in Texas and the only reservations that still exist here are the Alabama- Coushatta in Livingston, TX and Ysleta Tiguas outside of El Paso, TX.

http://www.texasindians.com/tigua.htm
The biggest reservation that Texas ever had was in Young County called The Brazos Indian Reservation.
http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/YY/hcy2.html
The only other groups or tribes that had even anything similar to a reservation was a mixed settlement of Cherokee, Shawnee, and several other tribes that was in what is now Cherokee County, TX. Chief Bowles or “The Bowl” lead them.
There is a Thompson Choctaw organization in East Texas ruffly in the same area to the border with Louisiana.
The Kickapoo have a reservation on the border on the Mexico side. I think it is at Eagle Pass.
Other than what I’ve already mentioned there are some groups and Indian organization throughout Texas the biggest populations being in North Texas (D/FW area), Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso.
Many Choctaw do live in the Dallas and Fort Worth area here in North Texas.

What were their names?

June 14, 2006 at 6:12 pm #21858Their names were West and Hixon. However, I just found out that it is not blackfoot but blackhoof. I’m not sure what the difference is here, but I’m looking around to see if I can find anything. This site is very interesting and some what mind boggling to me, trying to sort all of this out about my heritage makes me cross eyed..lol. Thanks for the information

What were their full names? You can’t track anyone down with just their surnames.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t there a Shawnee leader named Blackhoof, but much earlier than the time frame Jene is referring to?

Here is an interestesting article about Shawnee migrations through Kentucky & West Virginia that mentions Blackhoof (he was born presumably in Clark County, KY) and also the early days when the Shawnee were around the Cumberland River area …..
Of course, the “controversial” traditions abt. the Troxells, Mounce/Mounts, & some Cherokee concern the Monticello area in Wayne County…

Enoch was born 3-1847 and Eliza Jane was born 1-1870. This is where my trouble begins, I have not been able to find out who Enoch and Eliza Jane’s parents are. All of my research seems to stop with them. Thank you for the info you provided. You guys have given me some intersting reading material.
