I am researching these and related families of the Bushy Fork area, Person Co. NC. Does anyone know if there is a published manuscript of the minutes of Wheeler/Wheeley’s Primitive Baptist Church? The State archives said I can purchase a copy on microfilm, but I must first have permission of the Church to buy it.
Thanks,
Shirley
December 23, 2005 at 9:49 pm #18255Welcome to the forums. What specific lines are you looking and what are you looking for in the church minutes?
The earliest born Rimmer buried at Wheelers is Henry Rimmer born 10 Feb 1878.
The earliest born Hawkins is Nancy Jane Russell Hawkins born 29 Dec 1852, wife of Abraham Venable Moore and daughter of Calvin and Artelia Frances Breeze Hawkins
The earliest born Blalock is Nancy Blalock born 30 Jul 1849, wife of Chesley Davis and daughter of Austin and Malinda Allen Blalock.
December 23, 2005 at 9:49 pm #18256Hi,
I am specifically looking for the family line of Phoebe Ruffin who married James Rimmer. Their daughter, Phebia married Robert Anderson Blaylock.
I am looking for Anna Hawkins (father William) family line. She married Thomas Blaylock, father of Anderson. I am also looking for stories about my ancestors, their involvement with this church, how they lived, and other connections/clues that might help in my research including the “Black Dutch” family legend. These families were in the area from @1799 until @1830 when my line migrated to SC, then MS, then AL, then MS, then Choctaw IT OK, then AR.
Thanks,
Shirley
December 23, 2005 at 9:49 pm #18295Re: Phebe Ruffin, b.abt. 1755 NC, d. 1820 Person Co., NC, who m’d James Rimmer/Rimer, b.abt. 1755 NC, d. 1809 Person Co., NC.
(probable son of James Rimmer (b.1720 Md, d.abt. 1774) and Mary Whitfield)
Person Co was created in 1791 from Caswell Co., NC.
1790 Caswell Co census, p.92, lists James Rimer.
He is also on the 1784 Caswell Co., NC Tax List.
He may not have moved.
Caswell was created in 1777 from Orange Co., NC.
Phoebe Ruffin may be part of the Ruffins of Edgecombe Co, NC, where there are 7 households of them in 1790, descended from William Ruffin, b.1683 Surry Va, d. 10 Feb 1739 Bertie Co., NC; and Faith Gray, b.1688 Surry Va, d. 1720 Bertie NC.
Their sons:
Richard, b. 1704 Surry Co., Va.
William, b. 1708, Surry Co., Va; d. 1781 Bertie Co., NC.
Ethelred, b. 1712 Surry Co., Va; d. 1777 Northampton Co., NC.
Samuel, b. 1715 Surry Co., Va; 1779 Edgecombe Co., NC.
Nathaniel, b. 1719 Surry Co., Va, d. 1791 Surry Va (??)
All of these names are repeated in their families which creates the normal maze.
The GG-Granddau of James Rimmer and Phoebe Ruffin m’d back into the line of the Ethelred Ruffin (above) in 1900 McClain Co., Okla.
My caution would be that a Benjamin and John Ruffin, appear in Land Entry Records dated March 10, 1747 on Smiths River, just over the Virginia border from what would become Person Co., NC.
I think this Benjamin & John are part of the same Ruffin family out of Surry, Va., but don’t know for a fact.
I’m still working on this.

b. 23 Sep 1720 Harford Md

If you are a descendent of the William Ruffin and Faith Gray line you and I are related. I checked for your Phoebe on our family page and they have her listed in the unknown Ruffin’s but my guess is you are indeed a decsendent of these 2 Ruffins. I have two Ruffin lines and they both go back to William and Faith….I think all the NC Ruffins probably go back to William and Faith.

The Ruffin family is pretty well documented they have a site at geocities. There has been alot of research on this family.

December 23, 2005 at 9:49 pm #18310There is a Benjamin and a john born to Robert Ruffin and Elizabeth Watkins in the early 1700’s Elizabeth was the daughter of a Watkins and a Spencer this Spencer is rumored to go back to the Spencer family of England which lady Diana came from. At this point it was be my guess there are no indians in this line but John married a Simmons so……..who knows.
