Joshua had brothers William, John, Tom, and sister Mary, according to a relative who said those names wre written in an old Bible as brothers and a sister — no parents were listed, tho.

Recently for the first time I started searching the Byrum’s. They are in Bertie Co., NC before Tx — here they are on 1850 census.

The 5/12th F Mary AE Byrum married Joshua Allen Hawkins — she is Mary Ann Elizabeth. Mary’s parents are Edward and Mary Byrum.
In the household was “Job Gregory” and beside his name was the following — “remarks : idiotic”. This makes me think Edwards wife’s maiden name might have been “Gregory”. Job is the age to have possibly been her brother. Perhaps he needed to be cared for by others. I found this online and haven’t seen the original.
There appear to have been Byrum’s (spelled different ways) and Gregory’s both in Bertie County back to the 1790 census.

Several lived somewhat near known Tuscarora surnames (Blunt, Pugh and Green, maybe others L’m not farmiliar with). I wonder how a person cold find records that predate the 1790 census?
Dad (1915-1992) was born in Tillman Co., Ok and his grandma Maey Ann Elizabeth Byrum Hawkins was born in Bertie County, NC (1849/50-1926) and she died in Falls County, Tx. He sais as a child they made one visit down to Texas and he met her once. He said to me “she was a great big red headed woman” — that’s all that I recall.
Now if th results of those Hawkins DNA tests would hurry up and come in . . . 🙂 It says expect rsults in by Oct first 05 . . .

Mary A. E. Byrum’s father Edward was born about 1826 which would make him about 4 yrs old on the 1830 Bertie Co. Census.
Of the Byrums in 1830 Bertie, only John Byrum, age 30 to 39, has a male under 5 in his household.
On ancestry’s “Bertie County NC Vital Statistics”, Edward Byrum, b. 1826, was married in 1846 but who he marr’d isn’t listed.
Since Edward & family aren’t in 1860 Bertie County, they probably went west before then.
Mary A. E. Byrum had a brother named Starkey E. Byrum and there is a Starkey/Stark Byrum, b.abt. 1808, living in 1850 Bertie Co.
Mary’s brother may have been named for him.
Now that we have more names we may be able to find Joshua Hawkins, too.

p.s…. I found a family tree for this Bertie County Byrum line which contains the Byrums on the 1820, ’30 & ’40 census.
Before Bertie County, this line is in Hertford and Chowan Co’s, NC since the 1740s and could be the line of John Byrom, b.1700 Essex Co., Va Colony, although I see a problem with the “dates” on that particular family tree that needs some work.
Bill, I can look and look and take a couple of years to find something and you go and “find a source” in a few days to discover so much more. How do you do it? 🙂
Starky and Mary Ann Elizabeth are both in either Willamson, Milam or Robertson County, Tx after the Civil War. I don’t know if they were there in 1860 or not though. I think the population of Texas really took off after the Civil War with many Southeasterners fleeing west after their homes back east had been destroyed.
Joshua Hawkins census records say he was born in Alabama. The Byrums might have gone to Alabama and then Texas, or maybe they went to Texas immediately after leaving Bertie County, NC. Wish I knew which . . .
I don’t have a subscription to http://www.Ancestry.com any more so I can’t access their databases.

I had been hoping the Byrum/Bynum’s had gone to Alabama or Arkansas before Texas, but it doesn’t appear at this point to have been the case.
Chowan is east of Hertford & Bertie Counties.
Northampton, Halifax & Edgecombe are just west of Hertford and Bertie Counties.
