Greetings! My name is Kevin Bell. I am new to this site and I have really learned a lot. Let me tell you how I got here.
My Grandma Bell once told me and my Dad that my “Grandpa Bell was Indian.” My Dad was with me and he didn’t even know that. My Mom later told me that Gramdma had told her it was Cherokee (no surprise on that one). But, nevertheless I worked on that assumption. As I began doing genealogy I had my Mom contact my Grandma again (by this time she was in her mid 90s). She gave my Mom a surname of Buckhorn and a first name of a collateral family member known as Eutaw. I did some research on my Grandpa Bell’s line and found that his grandmother was surnamed Clatterbuck (I thought, I bet this was where my Grandma got the “Buck” from). Unfornately, she passed away shortly after so I couldn’t ask her any more questions. On the other hand my Dad’s cousin told my Father that this Clatterbuck woman was Seminole. My first thought on all this information was, probably too far North for Seminole and possibly too far North for Cherokee. My 2nd Great Grandmother, Elizabeth J., aka Jane E., Clatterbuck was born in Culpeper, later to become Rppahannock, County, Virginia (my Bell Family lived i Page County, right next door). In spite of these thoughts I persisted my search to no avail. Just recently I started it up again. I found a Clatterbuck Family Forum site. They seem to come from Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahnnock Counties in Virginia. Imagine my delight and excitement when I found references to Clatterbucks applying for Cherokee citizenship (rejected by the way), “brown skinned” people, an individual named “Powhatan” Clatterbuck, a gramother’s book full of names, “but they are all Indian”, and then a, what I thought at the time was a strange line: “they were all supposed to have been Blackfoot Indian”. Right, I thought, they’re in Montana aren’t they? Imagine my surprise and delight when, out of curiosity, I did a search of “Blackfoot Indians” and found your site. I never knew about the Saponi. I cannot say if I am descended from them or not, but the “Blackfoot” tie really interested me. I feel a tingling in my spine and I must keep pursuing this. Anyone out there have a Clatterbuck connection? My ancestor was Jane Elizabeth Clatterbuck, could be listed as Elizabeth Jane Clatterbuck, who was born about 1825 in Culpeper County, Virginia. The area where she was born became Rappahannock County. I don’t know which family is hers, but there are a lot of them in that area. Would love to compare notes, stories, etc., with anyone researching this family, Indian or not. Clatterbuck is not a very common name. Everyone I have met online or on the phone all trace their roots back to those three counties. I have a strong suspicion that alot of them have Indian blood, most likely the Tutelo connection. Later.
Thanks to you all,
Kevin Bell

I’ve been looking around a bit at your name of Clatterbuck. On rootsweb world connect I put in just the surname, born VA, 1825 with a 10 year variance and it seems like everyone is related. There were a few Elizabeth’s that fit but they all seem to go back to Richard Clatterbuck born Circa 1690 and Alice Guy. Just the name Guy makes one wonder about Saponi. Alice born c 1717 and I find no info on her so far. Then son James and Elizabeth Hurt or Hunt? Hurt or Hunt you could find on this forum. I’ll see what else I can find. Saj

I have been talking to other Clatterbucks, some of which have heard tales of Native American blood. I am pretty new to this site so I don’t know much about the Guy, Hurt/Hunt names. Are they known Saponi surnames? I really appreciate you looking around for me. I’ll let you know where my research takes me.
Kevin.
November 10, 2007 at 9:36 pm #29011There are only a half a dozen surnames that can be linked to tribal Saponi, and Guy is either one of them, or linked to one of them. Also I’m wondering if Clatterbuck could be a variant of Buck, a name found among Tutelo descendants at Six Nations, and it appears down here in Virginia, too. See my Carrie Buck article, http://saponitown.com/eugenics-carrie-buck/eugenics-carrie-buck.htm.
