Is anyone famliar with how the Danie surname connects to the Haliwa Saponi indian tribe? Or the Gingaskin Rez of Northampton, Va. I have hit a brick wall, I know the Robbins, Daniels, Coles and others were in that area.
A Bazzell Daniel, William, John, Joseph, Littleton,
We have had our DNa tested
We match Basil Daniel, Brittain Daniel, James Henry Daniel, Pearson Daniel, Edward Daniel of Henry county, Va. who married Anne? Hopkins 1772, Shenadoah, Basil Jeremiah, William were on the 1800 Pendilton district, Census, Basil moved to Old Buncombe 1805, then came to Davidson county, TN. by 1812, then went to Shelby and Clay county, Illinois, then migrated to Carroll county, Ark.
Barton Daniel and wife Delilah we think are the parents of Basil.
Barton was in Montgomery county, NC 1752, probabaly died there, also a Paul was listed living there, the lived by nathan almon and Isham Harris. Delilah also migrated to Illinois. This family moved around a lot.
Edward Daniel born 1750, probably Brunswick, VA. father possible John Daniel Sr. who married Elizabeth Marmaduke and second wife Sarah Weatherspoon. Edward migrated to Grainger and Hawkins county, Tn. 1800, he died in 1833.
Can someone tell me for certain how they connect to the indian tribe through Joseph Daniel. Thanks Vickie
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26680Hi,
I’m a Daniel and a Robbins descendent. My Robbins go back to Westmoreland County VA the best I have firgured out they are connected with the Bailey and Maddox families plus many others as they headed south into Edgecombe North Carolina. My Daniels were in Northampton Virginia. I descend from John Daniel from there. His family are labeled as indians in the Northampton court records throughout the 1700’s. The Daniels were Gingaskin and some moved down in Halifax NC and married with those that are Haliwa Saponi today. The nitty gritty truth is that all Virginia, North Carolina indians have married into each other so much in the later part of the 1700’s and the 1800’s it is hard to say who is who anymore. Those of us that stayed in our original homelands are mixed with all kinds of native ancestors especially the North Carolina indians. I have Tuscarora, Nottoway, Mattaponi, Gingaskin, and Saponi ancestors and possibly some Nansemond too. I have 2 lines of the Maddox family as well and I am unable to track one of those lines but they appear to come from the Somerset, MD bunch possibly Lazarus Maddox. I have alot of brick walls in my family…my Prices, Evans, Bailey, Maddox, Etheridges, Taylors just to name a few. This is very frustrating work. I think we can all agree on that!!!

May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26686I do know that my Daniels came from Northampton and that a George Daniel was in West Mooreland county, they came to NC. Virginia, Shenadoah, Halifax, etc. But this line is so hard to work out? Who are all the children of Joseph Daniel and Sarah Barnes? I know a John Daniel married Elizabeth Robbins, If I can remember correctly, she was the daughter of Obedience Robbins? Can you help at all on the Daniel line. They Mayes family comes into play, we also have a Bailey Daniel who married Pheobe trent. They were in Henry and Patrick county, VA.

May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26689I read somewhere that Col. Obedience Robbins married a Daniel but I’m not sure of that. Joseph Daniel is the son of Simon Daniel and Elizabeth Rogers. Joseph had a brother named Hardy who is my ancestor. Sarah Barnes is the daughter of Nathan Barnes son of Edward Barnes and Sarah Pope.
The Daniel family took a couple different routes out of Northampton VA. Some went through Surry County VA others headed west and than south and others continued west. SOme of the ones that headed south ended up in Halifax/Edgecombe area of NC and some of those continued to go even more south some ending up in Alabama. The Daniel and Rogers family lived near each other for a very long time moving to Toisnot NC together. Some of them even moved on the Alabama together. I am from NC but I have Daniel and Rogers cousins down here in Alabama where I live now. The Rogers family orginally lived on the Cashie River in Bertie County NC next to Indian Woods Rez. My Mother is a Rogers. I am from the Rogers and Daniel old stomping grounds of NC on the Toisnot Swamp home of the Toisnot Band of the Tuscarora Indians.

May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26713Ephraim Daniel had a daughter named Sarah that married Levi Rogers son of Tristram Rogers…..Levi and Sarah descendents are in Alabama today. Tristram Rogers is my 5th great grandfather. Rogers/Daniel these two families go neck and neck together from the early 1700’s onward…Daniel family on docs of Northampton County Va as indian…Rogers family on Nottoway, nansemond and Tuscarora docs. the Rogers family lived on the Cashie River at Roquist Creek (Indian Woods Rez) and just north of Bennetts Creek Rez on the Chowan side. The Daniel lived on both sides of the Chowan River near the Rogers family. The Rogers also lived near Chuckatuck in Nansemond Virginia before moving south into NC.

May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26714I should have also asked if anybody knows names of any of the other children of the John Daniel that QuestForFActs mentioned. Or anything else about him.
I did find what appears to be him mentioned in some Northampton Co. court records:
http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/Northampton.htm
For example,
pp.127-8, 13 September 1749, John Daniel Indian who was well as the King as for himself prosecutes William West, next court.
11 March 1755, p.199 John Daniel Indian v. Stephen Jeffery Indian, discontinued, agreed.
p.371, Benjamin Scott, administrator of William Scott, decd., & John Stratton v. John Daniel Indian, petition, plf. recover 1 pound, 7 shillings.
Not sure if this next one is the same John Daniel?
p.328, Littleton Daniel & his wife Frances v. John Daniel & Sarah his wife, Trespass, Assault & Battery, next court.
He seemed to be in court a lot. ;~)
I wonder how many John Daniels there were in Northampton at the time. It’s very interesting, since I am apparently related to a John Daniel.
Vic, do you know if my John Daniel (Bailey’s father?)
was from Northampton?
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26738Interesting that this came up, I just recently discovered an ancestor name Azuba Robbins from before 1850
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26739You should run down this line and see what you come up with, I know Obedience Robbins migrated from Salem county, NJ. Came to Northampton, Va. their daughter Elizabeth married a John Daniel, I think this John Daniel may be the brother to Joseph Daniel and Littleton Daniel, but not for certain. Vic
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26745It shows her husband being from NJ, so maybe they met in NJ. I will look into it.
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #26746Oops, correction. Some history shows that they have been in NJ or PA but not born there.
May 30, 2007 at 4:34 pm #27035I have not been on in awhile . I have quite a few Robbins in my line also. Hello 2 all missed you guys:) If you go to the search button you will find all my info on the Robbins in my line.:) Oo-neh
