Hi all,
I am not sure what to put this under- but my father got his DNA done, and he is 1/4 th. I think? there is another part of the DNA test you get to tell you the tribes.?????
I would like to put all my names down here from his side that lead back to Blackfoot. There maybe other eastern or south eastern tribes involved.
Here is the names:
WEST,LIVELSBERGER,JONES,BARNS(ES),
ROSS,WHEATON,REDDING,PEMBROKE,WEIR,BROWN,PLOTTNER,FOSTER,
LYNCH,FOSTER and BENEDICT.
They are all from the east and south east.

June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #33955I have Jones’ in my family line could you tell me some names of your Jones’ and where they are from?
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34024My Jones family are my 3rd great grandfather Hiram Jones. I can not tell you where he was born, because in the 3 census’s he was invloved in, he stated that he was born in that state. I do not know anything else about him, nor can I find anything more about him.He is a mystery. Thats the Jones in my family. 🙂
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34025Lady Hill, where are your Jones family from?
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34256Most of my Jones’ are from WV and Ohio, a few from Maryland. I really need to visit WV and do some more digging. THe Jones line I came from starts with Samantha Jones, and she came from a big family, unfortunately I don’t have all the names of these children. If there is anyway that I can help you let me know
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34402I have been looking for my Black Foot Ancestry. My Grand Mothers name is Mary Alice Barnes. She was born March 18, 1871 in Belmont County Ohio. Her Father was Elijah Barnes. He was born May 25, 1847 in Harrison County Ohio. He married Sarah Rebecca Hatcher May 26 1870. Its Sarahs Mother that Im interested in. Her name is Sarah Ann Tener. She was born Nov 23, 1819 in MD per obituary, but actually was born in Virginia. She married Commodore Perry Hatcher Dec 14 1837 in Belmont County Ohio. I have been researching her for quit some time. I took a trip to Belmont county ohio in 2000. Thats when I begin suspecting it may be Sarah Tener. But I cant prove it. I recently started looking again, so I was going thru my notes again first. I found a note I wrote before my trip to Ohio. This was before I begin looking into Sarah Tener as the possible Indian. The note read “Sarah Tener came from Baltimore Md to Capitan Creek in Barnesville Ohio. They were run out of Md by the white man. She met Commodore P Hatcher in Barnesville Ohio. She was with the Black Foot Nation. The white man chased them out of Capitan Creek also to the Big Five in Montana. Sarah Tener stayed in Ohio.”
I wrote this note before we found out they were Blackfoot. We always thought it was Cherokees. But during my search I connected to a relative still living in Ohio and she told me it was Black Foot. Does this make any sense to you.
Also my brother would like to do a DNA test, but do not have a clue on how to do that. Maybe you could advise us on how to proceed. Because it is so expensive, would not want to pick the wrong one. He wants to find the blood and trip if thats possible.
Thank you

To tell you the truth Lady hill, every new family member I meet knows absolulty nothing about my 3rd great grandfather. I find that very very odd. And I dont know what to think abou that. Peole have him matched up with other families.
I really can’t where he is from. I wish they would have made them give more informtion when they got their marriage license, but than it was not important.
I think what I will have to do first is find the place in the South Bend Indiana that has the death records and get a offical copy and see if it can shed some light on who thsi man was. I do know he died in South Bend in 1899. If he was buired in Lakeville Cemetery in Lakeville Indiana, that will be a hard one to prove- for the records were burned in a fire. Thats where his wife Rebecca Morningstar is also buried with no head stone. They were pretty poor.
I think I will make some calls and try and find that record this week. I will let you know if it says anything new.
🙂

Hi Doris,
The Barnes in my family comes from the east, I found them in Mass. and they came over from England by 1676 and they stayed in Conn and Mass. The more i have found, the more it tells me they were English.
The DNA part, I had my father take a DNATribes test, and it told a lot. It is very hard for me to understand what all the other stuff on it is about. I am trying to find an easier test and for my folks to take. I think I want them to take a Y for one and X for the other. we are pretty sure that my mothers father has Blackfoot formt he east in the family as well. So I am looking for a good test for them- affordable as well.
I wish I could help you more with the Barnes family. Maybe someone else on here would know. Keep searching give as much information that you can. And dont give up. 🙂
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34405Richard Haithcock lists the Barnes name as potentially Saponi, in his opinion. There are a number of Saponi descendants in Ohio to this today, with several re-organized tribal groups. The Blackfoot ID comes up so often among them that many have just assumed that the word was synonymous for Saponi. Also, I believe that often that was the only word remembered in families, that and the word Catawba. It wasn’t until modern times that the dots were connected back to the Saponi ID. “Saponi” was the tribal name the colonial governor decreed all the NC/VA Siouan were to be referred to as. Apparently, it’s not what people were calling themselves.
I’m wondering if the Tener name might not be a variant of Tanner. Try using the search feature here to see who else has posted with both of those names.
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34406Linda, I failed to tell Doris about the Search Feature. I was not feeling that good yesterday, and still dont feel the greatest. Not flu though.
I have never heard that about the Barnes. Can Richard Haithcock be found in a web search? My original Barnes were English/Irish, but I didnt think about them marrying a Saponi.
I will have to relook through my family tree. There was said at one time about Indian being in the Barnes side, but I pushed that aside because of no confirmation from any family member.
But I will relook at that.
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34407I wanted to post my Barnes Line. Maybe they have married into Saponi or cloes tribes. See if any of these ring a bell.

June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34408Richard has apparently found the Redding name among families considered Chowan. I cannot say how documented that is. (Remember, little about most Upper South Indian descended families is documentable.)
The Lynch name is common as dirt amongst the Haliwa Saponi. I believe it’s common with the Lumbee, as well. Day is a name that’s often come up among families believed to be Saponi. (See my http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm article.)
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34411Wow!… Linda, is all I can say. I have only 1 picture of my great grandmother, and she has the features, and looks Indian.
Thank you!
I will check out what you have!!
😎 🙂
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34413What type of DNA test did he have done? What was the name of the company?
June 20, 2009 at 11:02 pm #34419I had my father take the DNAtribes test.
