DNA testing is available to tell you your ancestral makeup. It can be helpful in telling those of us who are interested if you carry Native, european, or african DNA. If you want to know if you have Native American Ancestry. I completed the test for myself and it corresponded with the genealogical research that I had conducted. If anyone needs help with this or is interested please contact me for information.

I found that I am 13-14 percent European, 4-5 Percent Native/East Asian. Native Americans Migrated from Asia And American Indians test for East Asian DNA as wel (Mongolian, Chinese ect). That Explains why a Black American/White/Native Decendant from the south came up with those results. The remaining 79 to 80 percent being African. It had to be explained because we are southern decent.
You can legitimately join an established tribe, I believe based on their guidelines. That means having a recent ancestor on a Dawes roll or other rolls. Some people have ancestors on them but have been denied membership based on certain prejudices while some who have hardly any native ancestry have been allowed in. It depends on the tribe. It’s all politics. DNA testing is so new I really can’t say. It’s truly somewhat of a breakthrough. As for myself. I believe based on my research that I am a decendant of Some of the reminant Chowan clan that lived somewhere in gates county. If you read my other post. The problem here is there no longer a Legitimate tribe of these Native people who have been mixed, scattered or absorbed into the white or black population. We here can establish our own DNA Database and see if any of us share the same Native American DNA and are related to each other. The test are a bit costly but worth every penny. It starts at around $199 and up. The one I took cost $219, it looks back on your maternal and paternal side of our DNA. You are given a Certificate of your different Ancestry percentages and a CD with all of your genetic info. It is really neat!!! You can have other members of your family tested to prove and confirm other test. Example your mother or brother who may also have Native DNA. Then this means you are on the right path and confirms your Native American Heritage. My Mother and Brother will be tested next. If you still want the test e-mail me or reply and I will tell you what to do.
I have attached a file of my photo until I get my picture uploaded into the site.

good job on your info you explained it very well hope to see your photos soon ill be on here soon too n goodluck on your search chrisAugust 3, 2005 at 8:00 pm #15805
I’m wondering if it may be a waste of money to have your mother and brother tested, since their results will be similar to yours. Maybe your mother would be worth it, since it would tell you about her side exclusively.
Since these tests don’t tell you which tribe you descend from, they wouldn’t be of any use for enrolling with one. It may be useful if we could show that a high percentage of those of us on the forum are related to each other.
Cindy, it might be interesting someday to test to see if we’re related.

I am not from an all female or all male line for that kind of test. We had Deb’s father tested (Sinkey), using the father to father route. It came up that his line comes from England. That matched up with others’ genealogy research. But it also came up with a close match to China. Another DNA test explained what that kind of match meant in generations. This kind of result, according to that information, are results that would match NA emigration patterns and time. However, the company that makes the DNA test denied this information.
Anyway, it means that the NA blood comes through the female line. My family says that the NA came through the Sinkeys, but it could be through their marriage. William Sinkey, one of my Rev. War ancestors, married a McCartney, but we don’t know the last name of his mother.
So, the only kind of test that I know of that I could take is the one to determine NA percentage. I don’t know a female descendent to test.
Is there a kind I have not heard of that gives that kind of information, Linda?

One thing I must make clear abount DNA Testing is that you must have a clear understanding of Genetics and Population Migrations. First off some Caucasians show a small percentage of Asiatic genes due to the fact that there were invasion long ago from the Huns and genghis Khan ect. Mostly found in Eastern Europeans. Some whites show small or moderate percentages of sub-saharan African genes. They may have aquired through mingling with jews, italians, portuguese or arabs who carry african genes. Many southern whites as well as approximately 30% of whites in the US have african ancestors even where they never thought. Mullattos did exist and many intergrated in all white society. Many southern whites do have ties to blacks and vice versa. African Americans have 20%-50% european DNA! This is mostly from the paternal side. Many Black Americans have a native American branch on thier family tree. This book which talks about it was written by Katz an author on the book “Black Indians” Many native americans were enslaved on plantation during the early colonialization of the states expecially in the southeast Along with Africans. Some escaped and joined the indians and fought bounty hunters and were recaptured and resold into slavery, Indian, half caste ect. The Seminoles are an example. Now Money and politics have separated them all. Some groups of mixture of indians and africans spoke a mixture of African languages and native languages. In Connecticut there are whole tribes that have only intermingled with blacks. Like the golden Paugasette here where I live. They have the Deeds to all of downtown Bridgeport that goes back to the 1700’s. They are Black and Native American mostly.
Some DNA test can tell you with wich tribe you are closely affiliated with. The have sample. It does get costly but is very accurate. Along with your research and the Dna test you can Unravel a lot. Like I said if you can use this along with document proof some tribes will accept you. I belonged to the Native American Community house in New York. It provides Native Americans with a host of social and cultural services. You have to prove your ancestry to join and gain acess to the benefits. I moved to another state and have not been there in a while.

All tribes have different criteria fo membership, and these are based on guidelines that the BIA must approve of. The Cherokee Nation has the easiest (by far), most accessable membership criteria, and some of the western tribes are more hard core, some not allowing even people with less than 1/4th blood quantum in as members.
I am getting a Hawkins Y chromosome (male) test done to determine our Hawkins ancestor which we can not trace past 1837. I just mailed it off last week. I should get some results back in a few weeks . . .
