I came across this information while trying to make a connection to my Gowen/Goin family. Does anyone know the names of their siblings?
Frederick Gowen and Jonathan Henry Gowen, regarded as kinsmen, were born in the Patrick County, Virginia area and became patriarchs of Kentucky families that, in two centuries, have spread throughout the nation. Frederick Gowen was enumerated as “free colored” in Virginia, but was reported as “white” in the Kentucky census. Jonathan Henry Gowen was the father of 13 children. This genetic influence is apparent in 1990 in the descendants of both men–even eight generations later.
Frederick Gowen is regarded by some researchers as a Melun_geon [a recent appellation preferred by some whose ancestors were labeled Mulatto] because census enumerator recorded him as a “free colored male.” In many enumerations in the area individuals were listed as “mulatto,” “colored,” or “Indian” by the censustakers who had no other latitude in recording a dark-skinned person. He was born about 1797 in Virginia, according to the federal census of 1850.

The 1810 Rockingham Co., NC census contains
Jesse Going, over 45, p.217.
Fredrick Going, over 45, p.210.
Zephineah Going, over 45, p.238.
Johnson Goines, 26 to 44, p.218.
all listed white.
On the 1820 census, only Jesse, Jonson & Winnafred (Winnie) Going are still there, all FPC.
a Frederick Goin, FPC, over 55, is on the 1820 Sumner Co., Tenn census for Gallatin, p.186, which is on the Ky/Tenn border.
There is a Zephaniah Gowing on the 1787 Henry (from which Patrick Co was created in 1791) Co., Va Tax List.
His tax was charged to John Gowing Sr, listed with
2 males of 16 and under 21,
0 blacks
11 horses, mares or mules
30 cattle
Also on that 1787 list is Claborne Gowing listed with
0 males 16-21.
0 blacks
0 horses, etc
0 cattle

Thank you for the reply. I’m still hoping to find a connection for Martha “Patsy” Gowen/Goin to these NC/Va families…..
