I found this reference to my Goodman, Benton, Parker and Barefield relatives showing the close relationship between them. Possibly Saponi connections. One of the old maps (early 1700’s) shows Barefield on the map next to Meherrin Indian Towne, Chowan Precinct, Bertie, N.C.
“It has been proposed that it was in that part of Nansemond County that became a part of Chowan Precinct, North Carolina a few years later. Should the rent rolls have been made like a census, that is, house to house, the neighbors of John Pipkin were: John Parker, Richard Barefield, John Benton, (John Pipkin), Joseph Braddy, Christopher Dudley and Thomas Norris. The roll does not include the name of Henry Goodman who was a long time neighbor and John Pipkin. William Curry Harllee’s, Kinfolks’s, Vol. III, pg. 2337 has an article on Henry Goodman, in which it states he settled in Nansemond County as early as 1663. On 28 April 1711, he patented 256 acres of land, “Near Salem on both sides of Peter’s Swamp in that part of Nansemond County, which later became part of Gates County, N. C.”

June 11, 2006 at 6:46 pm #35296There’s also a possible Chowanoc link to the Parkers. On the 1733 Mosely map, the Parker name is shown right between the Bennet’s Creek and Catharine’s Creek, right inside the bounds of the Chowan reservation. And as you probaly know there was a Gates county Elisha Parker in the 1790 census as free colored.

AnonymousInactiveI’ve been doing alot of searching on my Daniel and Parker lines. Too many notes.
I saw the source: Abstracts of NC Wills by J. Bynum Grimes Secretary of State , 1910 p. 91 :
The Will of John Daniel , Northampton, VA 11-13-1754.
Lists sons and daughters:
Ezekiel, Ephraim, Joseph, John Jr. Abraham, Isaac, Sarah. Elizabeth, Wife, Sarah .
Extr. Sarah and son J.D. Jr.
Wits: Samuel Parker and Joseph D. Clk: I. Edwards.
My ggggg-gf was Edward Parker who was on the North Halifax tax lists with alot of other family members until 1796 when he moved down to NC.
I saw the Benton Vaughan site and I’ve been studying it. I think I found a Wm Daniel connection. He had a tavern. I’m trying to get all my notes organized.
Also Peter Evans was the first husband of Jean Early/Earley whose second husband was Thomas Parker b. Chowan, NC c. 1650 -1717.
She was his 2nd wife. His first was a Sarah LNU.
Jean’s father was Wm Earley/Earley m. Ellinore./Ellener. They had a son Wm Sr who I think died 1751.Soeone notated Wm & Th had different mother ??
My Edward Parker was born 1751 d. 1819.
These Parkers moved from Chowan /Gates to Edgecombe/Halifax, NC.
I found Edward Parker c. 1768 Gates co. lists/ Poll. Also, a town called Maresville, VA.

AnonymousInactiveHi ! I need to ask a question.
I was told my Josiah Daniel b. 1756 VA was he son of Joseph Daniel and Sarah Barnes.
Their Josiah died 1805/06 in Edgecombe, NC. Other Daniels with the name Josiah don’t match up. Josiah s/o Chesley ( Granville) born 1749 and died 1811.
I found Joseph Daniel’s brother, Hardy Daniel ,who married Sarah Barnes’s sister, Julia ( their children are therefore ” double first cousins” ) had sons named Lemuel and Elias Daniel. Elias married Trecy Simms.
She couldn’t be the ‘Treecy’ on Lew Griffin’s site who married Josiah s/o Joseph. But, Lemuel had two sons named : James and Josiah and they would be the approximate correct age to have been born c. 1756.
I found on the Rowan , NC tax list -1790
James, Josiah, Lyon ( should be Syon/Sion), Paul, Peter and Randal.
I did alot of searching on the Edgecombe, NC deeds and wills and found a Randal Daniel on a 1760’s deed VAfor peter Daniel, Sr. with John Avery. 30 years later in Rowan ( 1790) I think I found Randal, Jr. married to Elizabeth Avery. Probably father was John. Also, Peter was Peter, Jr. because his father, Peter, Sr.’s will was probated in 1790/1791.
These are all related – I found Paul etc. I think Josiah and James on this 1790 Tax list are the son’s of Lemuel Daniel. What do you think? Peter was thefather of Sion and paul. Randal died 1797 (Sr?) These names are on Ambrose Daniel’s will. Ambrose’s mother was Mary Ambrose. ? Joseph D. ? Ambrose married Sarah Edwards.
Thank you,
Magnolia
